Jason Sutherland manages the livestock operation at Tinwald Farm in Central Otago, New Zealand. When he started, the property was heavily stocked, high input and running short of feed every summer despite irrigation.

In the latest episode of Stockyard Sessions, Jason talks Emily through six years of trial and error: dryland species under pivots, large mobs, recovery periods out to 120 days, and the trials that didn't work. Today they're finding 10 to 15 worms in a spade, the animal health bill is down to basic vaccinations, and they’re finally reaping the benefits of these changes.

“I’m noticing all these little things start to happen. There’s life everywhere, big flocks of birds and bugs. The land just feels like it’s breathing”

Jake Smith didn't go cold turkey on fertiliser use; he just started moving cattle differently. Did a course. Read some books. Gradually built a system that, several years later, looks nothing like the operations around him in the New England region of NSW.

In the latest episode of Stockyard Sessions, Emily sits down with Laura Kiel, holistic nutritionist, Pilates instructor and founder of Balance Inside and Out.

Laura grew up on the land in Central West NSW before studying nutrition in Canberra, and her work is grounded in one idea: our health starts long before food reaches the table, in the land it's grown on and the animals raised on it.
