Barossa Valley, Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills After a long career in jewellery valuation for Sotheby's in Switzerland, my passion for w**e led me to Australia to study W**e Science and then establish the Michael Hall W**es brand in 2007. Eight extraordinary vineyards provide the fruit for my range of w**es that are made in small volumes and with utmost attention to detail.

Beyond the Bottle... Here's another tasting room favourite up on the wall at 103 Langmeil Road.

'Last Supper' Johan Andersson (1986-)

Andersson’s Gentile Embrace series “is a provocative modern-day rendition of biblical scenes”, including da Vinci’s Last Supper. The Twelve Apostles are represented by contemporary figures that are judged and outcast by society. It asks us to question our preconceptions and stereotypes.

'Alice’s Shoe' - Charles Blackman (1928-2018)

Blackman produced a series of 46 major works inspired by Lewis Caroll’s fantastical classic Alice in Wonderland. They offer a bizarre, hallucinogenic illustration of Caroll’s iconic adventure that broke the Victorian mould of instructional children’s literature, encouraging imagination and freedom of thought.

Michael’s love of fine Chardonnay is only matched by his dislike of fat and flabby offerings. In his early years he stalked Chardonnay gurus, with brief stints in Australia at Giaconda, Cullen W**es and Shaw + Smith, and in Burgundy at Domaine Leflaive.

Like all great w**e the lesson learned was that vineyard is paramount and a light hand is required in the cellar.

Happy International Chardonnay Day. From Piccadilly to Puligny, cheers to whichever Chardonnay is in your glass.
