Mount Yulong

Mount Yulong Mount Yulong Poll Merino Stud, breeding heavy cutting large framed medium wool polled sheep in Victoria for over 30 years

Last year Mount Yulong Poll Merino Stud sold over 100 quality poll rams to clients in Victoria. The rams the Stud is producing are meeting the changing market place. With emphasis on an easy care animal - which has a bigger, plainer body, well covered in soft handling, medium wool. Mount Yulong Poll Merino Stud is aware that we need to breed a sheep with a good constitution to increase meat produc

tion and lambing percentages without affecting the quality and amount of wool produced. This way we can benefit from both meat markets and wool markets - making profits greater. We also understand the benefits of having poll merinos - we have been breeding them for over 30 years - and we feel that we have an animal equal to if not superior to the merino - in body capacity, wool and ease of handling.

At Mount Yulong, we mightn’t measure and test for everything under the sun. But what we do measure is dollars of produce going out the gate and we do that with scale.
This week we sold a load of 300 second draft merino wether lambs, they were shorn as lambs in November approximately 2kg. They were then shorn again a few weeks ago cutting 3.5kg. Then on the truck as finished lamb out of the feedlot, dressing out at 26kg.
Total income for there 12month life
First shearing $20
Second shearing $30
Meat sale value $250
Total income from merino wether lambs $300 average, not just the top pen.
