Topper's Mountain Wines

Topper's Mountain Wines Family owned wine co growing cool-climate, alt variety grapes, making good wine to enjoy with friends

We're in the GI (wine region) of New England, Australia at 900m asl on the western edge of the Great Dividing Range in northern NSW near the little village of Tingha. We have one of the very few vineyards in Australia with deep terra rossa profondo soils at high altitude. We specialise in mostly Mediterranean alternative varieties. We make small batch, distinctive wines with a focus on being food-friendly & reflecting their unusual terroir.

Our Touriga & Tintas is a blend of Touriga, Tinta Cão and Tinta Roriz that looks toward the sun-baked schist slopes of the Douro Valley, Portugal. When we visited in October last year, we noticed how similar the colours at Topper’s are. Can you spot which is which?

has found a distinct voice at Topper’s Mountain. Ripening slowly; building perfume, tension and structure. Which will you chose? Our 2017 Keeper Nebbiolo for its structure, acidity and intense tannins, sour cherries, liquorice, underpinned by earthiness. Or the natural tension and energy of our 2023 Seeker Nebbiolo, which bounces forest strawberry, sour cherry, dried rose.

Our site has bright Red Ferrosol soils work alongside our high altitude to put a bit of pressure on our vines as they grow. This is a combination rarely seen in viticultural contexts, especially Australia. For varieties like Tempranillo Blanco, Nebbiolo, Touriga Nacional and Syrah these are ideal conditions 🍇

It’s our earliest vintage ever at Topper’s Mountain. Wines. This week we picked Nebbiolo, Tannat will be off next. Our changing climate makes it even more important to tune into terroir and what our vines need.

We’re doing what we in the vineyard and beyond to make more sustainable wine, and we’re on route to be carbon neutral 💚🌿 you can read all about it on the Journal.
