It’s Tastebuds and Spring Flower Festival weekend in Tumbarumba, and there’s no better time to come and explore our little corner of the world.

Spend the weekend discovering local w**es, wandering through beautiful gardens, enjoying great food and meeting the people who make Tumba such a special place.

Our cellar door will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm. Come and find your new favourite w**e, enjoy a tasting and take in the beautiful surrounds.

I’ll also be pouring Johansen Wines at the Nest - Cinema:Cafe:Books on Saturday evening from 6pm to 7pm. It’s a great night of sparkling w**e, a movie and dinner, and another fantastic reason to make a weekend of it.

So come for the flowers, stay for the w**e, and discover a little more of Tumbarumba.

We’re changing things up at Johansen Wines!

We’ve found that so many of you are already visiting us for private tastings, so we thought… why not make that the way we do things!

Rather than our traditional cellar door hours, we’re moving to private tastings by appointment. That means a more relaxed experience, when it suits you.

Want to try our w**es? We’d absolutely love to have you here!

Our private tastings are completely free, relaxed and everyone is welcome. Whether you’re a local, passing through or planning a weekend away, we’d love to pour you a glass and show you what we’re all about.

Just give me a call, shoot me a text or send me an email, and I’ll sort the rest out.

Spring is starting to wake things up around the vineyard, and this is usually the time we'd return to regular cellar door hours.

For now though, we're still in the thick of it, with pruning finishing up, irrigation going back online, and plenty happening behind the scenes to get ready for the growing season.

The good news is we'd still love to welcome you !

It's a great chance to experience the vineyard as it comes back to life and enjoy a relaxed, personal tasting in the shearing shed.

We're pretty bloody stoked to share that Johansen Wines has been named a Regional Finalist in the 2026 Riverina Murray Business Awards for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism.

To be recognised alongside so many great businesses in our region is something we're incredibly proud of.

A huge thank you to Business NSW for the recognition and to the judges for considering our story.

This one belongs to everyone who's been part of the journey. To our family who planted these vines 35 years ago, our customers who choose to support a small family w**ery, everyone who's visited the cellar door or stayed at Glenburnie Cottage, and the local community that's backed us every step of the way.

Everything we do is about looking after this place, growing great grapes, making honest w**e, and showing people why Tumbarumba is so special.

Sunday jobs that don’t make it onto the to do list, but probably should.

A little maintenance now makes the work a whole lot easier when the secateurs are back in the vineyard. 🍇

When we ordered 20 tonnes of straw, we realised we had absolutely no idea how far it would actually go.

Would it cover one hectare? Ten hectares? The whole vineyard?

So we decided to measure it.

After spreading, weighing and adjusting the coverage, we landed on around 1.3 kg of straw per metre of row. For us, that looks like it will provide the right amount of coverage without using more straw than we need.

Just to be clear, this isn’t a recommendation. It’s simply the rate that seems to work for our vineyard, our soils and what we’re trying to achieve. I know the AWRI has published work using application rates more than double this, so there isn’t a one size fits all answer.

Hopefully this gives others a practical reference point if you’re trying to estimate how much straw you’ll need. Sometimes that’s the hardest question to answer before you even get started.
