Cob pizza oven day #2. We bagged up some of our soil, as we didn't have enough sand, and built pour sand castle middle on top of it. We covered the lot in damp paper and then a 2ish cm layer of clay/soil mix. Finally we added our own dried grass to make a cob layer approx 5cm thick, and I built a little chimney.
Last job is a final clay layer that Chi and I will decorate. $210 total cost.

We found our newly laying hen's secret stash of eggs this morning, so we tried out the "Impossible quiche" recipe of the Mudgee High School Support Unit Cookbook. We added our home grown carrots, rainbow chard, the last baby zuchinnis and our prolific self-seeded parsley. We made a huge mess and Evie had an awesome time.

Cob pizza oven day #1. We (well Harrison) used the wood from a hardwood pallet and split logs to build the base. Meanwhile, the kids and I sifted our clay soil to remove the majority of the river pebbles. We filled the base with sand, added some fire bricks and surrounded them with a few pavers we had lying around. We had one gap that just happened to be a brick width, and we happened to have one brick, so I whacked that in too. I have a new found respect for landscapers, as despite my best efforts, the fire bricks ended up far from level. We finished up the day by measuring a circle from the centre point to serve as the outline for our sandcastle!

Seed snails are a space efficient way to sow seeds and we can tuck 10 + snails in each storage container greenhouse. I've seen these made of all sorts of materials, but we always have an abundance of paper bags (we do sometimes remember to take our canvas ones) and I love being able to unroll the snails and plant the whole length, paper and all in a trench. Root veg and other veggies that prefer direct planting can also be sown in snails 🐌

Did you know that you can just fold over the bottom of a toilet roll, pop in a seed and plant the whole thing out when the seedling is ready?
Don't have that insta worthy upcycled window greenhouse (yet)? Make mini greenhouses out of plastic storage containers!

Eating whilst poor is much nicer when you can shop from your garden.

With a $4k bill coming up this month to take care of my luxury bones (dental in Medicare now!), we have to cut back on our grocery expenses again.

We buy frozen day old bread from our local bakery for $1, and I found a quarter of an avo browning in the fridge from Evie's snack God knows how long ago. Cut off the oxidised section and add to toast with our home grown eggs, zuchinni and rainbow chard.

We have also started making our own caramel coffee syrup, which takes 40 mins once or twice a month, but 1L costs the same as the tiny bottle from the supermarket.

We have some exciting news!

Backed by the right support, one big idea can change a women’s future.

Each month from February to November, we award one $10,000 scholarship to a woman with a BIG IDEA who needs funding, time and support to bring it to life.

Meet our April 2026 Big Idea Scholarship winner, Ellen Osahor, founder of Mystwood Farm Education.

A high school English teacher and permaculture educator, Ellen founded Mystwood Farm Education to support teenagers who struggle in traditional classroom settings. Through hands-on, farm-based learning experiences, she is helping young people reconnect with education in a way that works for them.

This scholarship will fund a pilot holiday program, helping Ellen demonstrate the impact of her model while making the program accessible to more young people and families.

By creating alternative pathways to learning, Mystwood Farm Education is helping young people build confidence, develop practical skills and discover new possibilities for their future.

Mystwood Farm Education had the absolute pleasure of hosting students from the Gulgong High School Support Unit for their Community Access excursion on Wednesday.

GHS students experienced sustainable living through; a tour of Bloss the Tiny House, hand feeding our miniature horses and beautiful therapy cows, weaving garden dividers from reused materials, planting out our new herb wheel, and making fresh pizza from home grown and local produce.

The students were a credit to their school, participating with enthusiasm and curiosity, and interacting with the animals in a calm and respectful manner.

We look forward to future visits!
