As all of you probably realise I don't usually post on these type of platforms and instead prefer to communicate directly.
In this exception l believe it is my responsibility to send a message regarding an issue that affects every Australian who believes in ideals such as freedom of choice and integrity. This also directly affects anyone like myself whose organic farm business provides food to their community as well as their family's livelihood.
The FNANZ Food standards for Australia and New Zealand is proposing a bill P1055 that would allow genetically modified (GMO) ingredients to enter the Australian food supply without any traceability or labelling requirements. This means consumers would have no way of knowing whether the food they buy contains GMOs or gene editing, removing our right to make informed choices about what we eat.
This would also put the responsibility, financial strain and burden of proof on the organisations trying to maintain safety from GMO exposure, namely the certified organic sector.
If passed this would make Australia the first country to permit this degree of deregulation of GMOs into the public!
This bill is not just a simple technical regulatory change - it is a direct attack on consumer choice, farming integrity, and food sovereignty. Australians deserve to know what’s in their food and where it comes from.
I urge all citizens to speak out now—contact your MPs, sign petitions, and demand that FSANZ maintain strict GMO labelling and traceability. The future of our food system depends on it.
