NEW! Introducing Tathra Place Free Range to Empower Wholefoods!

Meet Luke and Pia Winder, the family behind Tathra Place Free Range, a 100-acre regenerative, multi-species farm in Wombeyan Caves, NSW.

Luke and Pia started Tathra Place in 2016 with a very different vision for farming — one where raising animals could actually help HEAL the land. Their animals live on fresh, diverse pasture and are rotated through the farm so each species plays its part in building fertility, improving the soil and regenerating the ecosystem. They grow chemical-free, pastured beef, pork and chicken, without hormones or antibiotics, with non-GMO supplementary feed where required.

And the animals get to behave like animals! As they say, they “respect the pigness of the pig”.

Their meat has gone on to be served in some of Australia’s best restaurants, but it’s their philosophy that really got us:

“HAPPY animals lead to HEALTHY customers that are HEALING the earth.”

YES!

This is exactly the kind of farming we want to support at Empower, which is why we’re so excited to now be stocking Tathra Place Free Range meat right here in Ulladulla.

Know your farmer. Know where your food comes from.

Come in and check out the range in our freezer!

P.S we enjoyed slow cooked lamb shoulder on the weekend and it was sensational 😋

Taste the difference.

A first-time fruit & veg box customer came into the shop the other day and said, “Oh my gosh! The carrots actually taste like carrots! They are delicious!”

Once you’ve tasted an organic carrot, banana, apple or tomato, it’s hard to go back. The flavour is stronger, sweeter and richer. It actually tastes like the food it’s supposed to be.

There’s a reason for that. Organic produce is grown in healthy, living soil without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. It’s picked ripe and in season, rather than picked early so it can spend weeks being transported and sitting in cold storage before it reaches the supermarket shelf.

And it’s not just about taste. The quality of the soil, when produce is picked and how long it’s stored all affect its nutrient content. Fresh, seasonal, organically grown fruit and veg means better flavour and better nutrition.

Taste the difference for yourself.

We follow the seasons.

That means our produce is picked when it’s closest to being ripe. No artificial ripening, no overseas travel, no cold storage for months and no bland, out-of-season produce.

We’ve become so used to being able to buy almost anything all year round, but if it’s not naturally in season, it has to come from somewhere — often imported, transported long distances or grown in hot houses.

There are LOTS of reasons to eat with the seasons:

* It tastes better.
* It’s fresher + more nutritious.
* It hasn’t travelled as far or been stored for months.
* It’s better for the planet.
* When there’s more of it around, it’s generally more affordable too.

And on the subject of price… if you assume organic fruit + veg at Empower is expensive, come in and check out our prices. You might be very surprised, especially when you’re eating with the seasons.

Right now we’re still seeing lots of late Winter produce — citrus, apples, pears, kiwi fruit, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, beetroot, fennel, leeks, pumpkin, sweet potato + leafy greens. Spring is only days away, so you’ll start to see that change over the coming weeks.

Everything we stock is certified organic, from as close to home as possible, or spray-free from local growers when we can.

Fresh delivery tomorrow morning!

And there are only a few days left to try one of our seasonal Fruit + Veg Boxes at the subscription price so you can save $$.

If you’ve been curious about the boxes, now’s the time to give one a go. You’ll get a box packed with fresh, seasonal produce and see just how much you actually get for your money.

Offer ends August 31.

Did you know most chewing gum is made with PLASTIC?

I had NO idea. At Empower, we do our due diligence and look closely at all the ingredients before we choose to stock a product, and when we started looking into chewing gum, we were horrified.

If you check the ingredients on a packet, you’ll usually see “gum base”, but what that doesn’t tell you is that it can be made from synthetic, petroleum-derived polymers — basically plastic.

And we chew this stuff for HOURS. Our kids chew it. They swallow it. So that gum — and everything in it — ends up going through their gut. Some chewing gums have also been found to contain phthalates — chemicals used to make plastics that are known endocrine disruptors and can disrupt our hormones. Then you can have artificial sweeteners, flavours and colours in there too.

And if we don’t swallow it, where does it go? Plastic-based gum isn’t biodegradable. It gets spat onto footpaths, stuck under tables, thrown in the bin, ends up in landfill and can make its way into our waterways. It doesn’t just disappear when we’re finished chewing it.

This is exactly why we stock True Gum. They use chicle, a natural sap from trees, instead of synthetic gum base. It’s plastic-free, with no aspartame, artificial flavours or colours.

If you chew gum, or your kids do, go and have a look at the packet. Because once you know what “gum base” can actually mean, you probably won’t look at chewing gum the same way again.

We have a bunch of True Gum, True Dates & True Mints flavours at Empower.

Where have all our sardines gone?

If you’ve been looking for our Good Fish sardines lately, you’ll have noticed the shelf is empty.

The sardines they source are currently affected by low stock levels in the harvesting areas, and a temporary fishing ban has been introduced to give stocks time to recover and regenerate naturally.

We fully support it. Sustainable sourcing sometimes means a product simply isn’t available for a while, and Good Fish expects their sardines to be back in late November.

We know how many of you love them, so we are looking for alternatives — but we won’t just stock any sardines.

We do our due diligence on every product we bring into Empower. We look at where it comes from, how it’s produced and every ingredient on the label. One of our non-negotiables is no seed oils, including sunflower, canola, rapeseed, soybean and generic vegetable oils.

So while the sardine shelf might be a little bare for now, we’re doing the work behind the scenes to find options that meet our standards.

If the ingredients don’t meet our standards, it doesn’t make it onto our shelves. It’s a big part of what makes Empower different.

Not all ceremonial cacao is created equal.

Just like coffee or wine, there are huge differences in the quality of cacao — the variety, where and how it’s grown, how it’s harvested and how it’s processed.

Loco Love Gold Sun Discs are made from 100% pure wildcrafted Chuncho Urushayhua cacao from Peru — a rare, ancient variety prized for its rich, complex flavour.

It’s whole cacao, retaining its natural cacao butter and naturally occurring magnesium, iron, antioxidants and theobromine.

And these beautiful little discs make it VERY easy to create your own cacao ceremony — in the everyday or for a special occasion.

MAKE YOUR OWN CACAO

Place ½ a Sun Disc in your favourite cup, pour over hot water and stir until dissolved. Add warm milk if you like, a little honey or maple, cinnamon and a tiny pinch of cayenne.

½ disc = everyday cup
1 whole 33g disc = ceremonial serve

Enjoy it in the morning as an alternative to coffee, in the afternoon, or make it a weekly ritual.

Light a candle. Take it outside. Journal. Set an intention. Meditate. Follow it with Yoga Nidra.

Your ceremony can be whatever you want it to be.

And can we talk about the packaging? The Sun Discs come in the most gorgeous gold box, making them a beautiful gift for someone special — or a very good gift to yourself.

Loco Love Gold Sun Discs are now at Empower.
