2025 GOAL - streamlining, automating & documenting systems

The problem with any family owned and operated business, especially a property, is that it is very dependent!

We are currently endeavouring to make improvements so that our operation is less reliant on us.
These include;
▪️the installation of a Farmbot water monitor and rain gauge on our main nest
▪️improvements to houseyard watering systems
▪️professionally produced farm maps
▪️’Robert’ the robotic vacuum/mop

We hope these projects/tools free up time for us to focus on sourcing, multiplying and advertising Santa Gertrudis genetics.

If you have an app or tool that’s helped your grazing business we’d love to hear about it. Especially interested in recommendations on quality tap timers 🚰 (Not keen on digging up the lawn to install a fully automated system.)

“CUP FILLED”

We had a wonderful time surrounded by breed enthusiasts and aspiring cattle people at the Santa Gertrudis National Youth Camp 2025.

We’d like to thank everyone involved in running such a wonderful event! The growth we saw in the children over the period of the camp and their joy truly warmed our hearts.

We had the opportunity to donate a purebred heifer to the Champion Herdperson and were both shocked and delighted to have our eldest niece Ella Phillips win this award at a mere 12 years of age. Not to be outdone the rest of the Murgona Team received several places across Stud Judging, Prime Judging and Junior Paraders competitions and did themselves proud!

With Youth Camp ticked off preparations now begin in earnest for the Sydney Santa Gertrudis Feature Show where we hope to exhibit this team and more.

"PAYING IT FORWARD"

We are delighted to support the Santa Gertrudis Australia Association and the youth of the beef industry by donating Murgona Sprinkles S101 (P). Sprinkles (P) will be awarded to the Champion Herdsperson of the 2025 Santa Gertrudis National Youth Camp, to be held at Warwick next week.

Murgona Sprinkles S101 (P) is a 10.5 month old, tractable, unjoined heifer with good breeding. A long, deep bodied, poll heifer, Sprinkles oozes femininity. She stands on adequate bone and exhibits good udder development. Her kind eye, large ears, smooth shoulders, exceptional coat, lovely temperament and loose skin make her an ideal candidate for an aspiring stud master to build their herd around.

Dam - Murgona Lace L13 (P) is a daughter of the reputable Diamond H Penthouse (PP). She has had 4 calves to date with her 5th expected any day now. A son sold for $8000 in 2023 while a full sister to Sprinkles has been retained, classified and is currently PTIC. Lace is the daughter of a foundation female, Kabunga A72, who had 9 calves in her lifetime. Of these 3 classified daughters are breeding on in the herd and a son sold for $8000 in 2018.
Sire – Yarrawonga Quake (PP) was purchased in 2021 for $55,000. In his first season Quake was single sired to 50 females who returned a 98% pregnancy rate! From his first drop of calves 15 classified heifers were retained who have since recorded a 100% pregnancy rate after a 7 week joining to Murgona Parker. 15 Yarrawonga Quake (PP) sons were sold for a 100% clearance at the 2024 Murgona Production Sale. Selling to a top of $50,000 and recording an average of $18,733 it’s clear that Quake’s genetics are in demand.

2024 saw our family owned and operated business achieve goals we’d only dared to dream about!

We have big plans for 2025, starting with the Santa Gertrudis Australia Youth Camp.

Thanks to everyone that made 2024 the year that it was. We look forward to being a part of your 2025 and vice versa.

Today the industry remembers a pioneer.

Alastair & Louise’s contribution to the Australian Beef Industry, but especially the Santa Gertrudis Breed, is undeniable! For that we thank them!

Our loving thoughts are with the Bassingthwaighte & Ferguson families at this time. Alastair was a friend and inspiration to many and his passing will leave a great void.

HUMBLED is the best way to describe our emotions this week!

The interest in, and support for, our stud has been overwhelming.

We are thrilled to report that yesterday 29 of 29 Bulls sold for an outstanding average of $17586 while 1 Elite Genetic package reached $30000. An incredible 7 lots sold into Santa Gertrudis Studs across Australia and we are as anxious as the new owners to see what these Murgona genetics will go on to produce.

Thanks again to all the purchasers and underbidders, our agents TopX Roma and Prue from CPB Designs who documented this exciting day. I look forward to sharing more photos as the ‘dust settles’.

Bulls will be available for inspection at the Taroom Showgrounds from 3pm Friday the 13th of September & penned from 9am on Saturday the 14th.
