Is your local school signed up for our Virtual Classroom with Farmer Narelle?

This fun and interactive virtual classroom session is designed for students from Prep to Year 7. Students will meet Farmer Narelle and learn about life on a dairy farm, how cows are cared for, where milk comes from, and the important role dairy farmers play in producing nutritious food.

It's a great opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world agriculture through a live and engaging experience.

The first session is scheduled for Wednesday 2 September from 10:00am to 10:45am (AEST) so make sure your local school signs up!

What a few weeks it's been across Gippsland!

The GippsDairy team has been out and about supporting dairy farmers through a range of extension programs. Veronica facilitated the Women in Dairy: Calving & Reproduction workshops in South and West Gippsland, Shanky joined Feeding Pastures for Profit: Early Spring days in South Gippsland and the Macalister Irrigation District with Phil Shannon, and Megan delivered days 1 and 2 of Rearing Healthy Calves in West Gippsland and days 1 and 2 of Milking & Mastitis Management in the MID.

A big thank you to everyone who hosted, attended, shared their experiences and contributed to the conversations. The strength of our industry comes from dairy farmers learning together, sharing ideas and taking practical knowledge back to their own businesses.

That's why we're thrilled to have Jo Duffy as MC for our 20 Years of Women in Dairy Gippsland Ladies Lunch.

From co-founding the South Gippsland Women in Dairy Discussion Group in 2006 to establishing a Women in Dairy group in Rochester, Jo has dedicated her career to creating opportunities for women to connect, learn and grow. Now celebrating more than 20 years with Murray Goulburn and Saputo, she remains passionate about the people, relationships and communities that make our dairy industry so special.

We're delighted to have Jo guiding us through this special celebration as we reflect on the past, present and future generations of women in dairy.

What did GippsDairy look like in 1996? At the time, Gippsland was home to 2,709 dairy farms, with an average herd size of 140 cows. The region had recently amalgamated 29 shire councils, and agricultural land averaged $7,595 per hectare. It was also a time of significant change for the industry, with GippsDairy still a young organisation finding its feet.

Leading the organisation brought both opportunity and expectation. The newly formed board was learning the responsibilities of governance, stakeholders had strong views about how industry funds should be invested, and Sandra Jefford recalls her interview for the Executive Officer role as the toughest she had ever experienced.

Under Sandra's leadership, and with funding from the Dairy Research Development Corporation, GippsDairy delivered a range of innovative initiatives that provided valuable support to dairy farmers and the wider industry. Programs such as the How Now Gippy Cow newsletter, the Dairy Self Assessment Tool, Focus Farms and the Teacher Released to Industry Program (TRIP) became highly regarded services, with elements of these initiatives continuing to operate today. These early investments helped establish GippsDairy's reputation as a trusted source of industry information, education and support for Gippsland dairy communities.
