What an incredible three days at the Australian Merino Production Trial Shearing Evaluation!

At Lachlan Merinos, we strongly support independent, industry-relevant benchmarking. Trials like this provide real, practical insights linking genetics, performance, and profitability straight back to the paddock.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to making the event a success, especially Craig and Karen Wilson. Your ongoing dedication over many years continues to make a real difference for commercial Merino producers. Also a big mention to the Fletchers international team at Kiagathur Station Condobilin on the management of the stock!

We’re very proud of how Lachlan genetics performed against 74 teams and 40 bloodlines.
A special congratulations to Des and Irene Ryan, long-time supporters of the Lachlan program.
Their outstanding results included:
• Highest clean fleece weight team – 6.1kg
• Highest greasy fleece weight team – 9.8kg
• $15.16 above the average fleece value (5-year fleece value average).

Even more impressively, the team achieved a $308 carcass value in the carcass component of the trial last year. This highlights the strength of a Merino enterprise in generating multiple income streams.

A fantastic achievement and a great example of what strong genetics can deliver when all sheep have been managed in the same environment.

It’s been a big week on the genetic benchmarking front. First stop on Monday was the South West Slopes Sire Evaluation Field Day.
Proven sire Lachlan Merinos 220118 was one of 16 sires in the evaluation, and it was encouraging to see him displaying his balance of traits, excellent shape and conformation along with the waxy white, sharp wools he’s well known for.

A real highlight so far has been his early growth and classing rate, mirroring exactly what we’ve been seeing on farm at Lachlan.
Initial shearing and carcass results are still to come, so we’re looking forward to seeing how those stack up.

Well done to Burge Ag for presenting the lambs in such great condition in what has been a very challenging season. And a big thank you to the SheepMetriX crew, especially Bridget Parkman, who has put an outstanding amount of time and effort into this trial.
Great to see solid data backing up what we’re seeing in the paddock.

🎥Video of the lambs are in the comments.

Finished up a solid week of shearing with a great crew. With the wool market gaining momentum, it’s a timely reminder of how important high-fleece-value sheep really are.

Big thanks to Melissa Armstrong and Elliot Learmonth for organising an unreal team. Great job done and lots of quality wool out the shed.

What a way to kick off the wool selling year! 🐑✨
The highest EMI we’ve seen since 2020, this is setting an exciting tone, with strong demand and renewed confidence across the wool industry.

When you run a Merino that not only cuts a high-value fleece but also delivers strong carcass performance, you’re getting paid twice from the one animal. 💪
That’s the advantage of balanced breeding—and exactly why Lachlan Merinos genetics stand out.

Lachlan Merinos Named Top Merino Stud in Australia for 2025! 🐑🏆

We are excited to announce that Lachlan Merinos has achieved the No. 1 Merino Stud in the country this year! This milestone highlights our ongoing commitment to the quality and improvement of our sheep, as we continue to push forward with innovation, genetic advancements, and a focus on commercial realities.

At Lachlan Merinos, our breeding decisions remain grounded in commercial objectives, and we continue to invest significantly in genetic progress. A major part of this ongoing effort is our ET and AI programs, which are designed to deliver the next generation of high-performing Merinos. Our most recent embryo transfer (ET) program was our largest and most successful to date, with 18 donor ewes and an impressive 198 embryos transferred. This marks another step forward in our strategy for long-term genetic improvement.

Looking ahead to our 2025 progeny. All lambs have been DNA 50K sampled, breech scored, and assessed for both weaning and post-weaning weight. Autumn-born lambs have also been individually assessed for worm burden, allowing us to provide a worm ASBV for 2026 — a valuable tool for clients in high worm-challenge environments.

We are also thrilled to report the successful integration of two exceptional sires, Lachlan 220118 and Wiringa Park 220450 into our program. With over 200 progeny now on the ground, the daughters of these sires have been joined to each other, a critical step that will drive the next phase of genetic advancement at Lachlan Merinos. Sons of both sires will make up a significant portion of our 2026 team, and we are confident they will continue to enhance productivity and profitability for our clients.

Additionally, we’re proud to share that 17 of the top 50 Merino studs have recently used Lachlan genetics. This highlights the growing recognition of Lachlan Merinos not only as a commercially relevant breeder but as an industry-leading source for stud stock. It’s truly humbling to know that breeders are choosing our genetics to enhance their own flocks.

We’re also grateful for the strong increase in interest this year, with 16 more registered bidders compared to last year. This growing interest is a testament to the hard work and dedication we’ve put into our breeding program, reflecting the balance we strive for between strong growth, good carcass traits, and high-quality fleece. Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited to offer at least 180 rams, with our 2025-drop progeny expected to continue building on this progress and provide valuable benefits to our clients.

As we enter 2026, we wish all of our clients a happy and successful New Year! We look forward to working together in the year ahead and continuing to deliver outstanding results for your flocks. Here’s to a successful and rewarding 2026. 🎉

Many Merino studs recorded their strongest average price in years.

🧬Proven Semen Sire — Wiringa Park 220450 “King”
One of the most influential sires in the industry currently!

Originally destined to be retained as a stud sire at Wiringa Park, WA, we were fortunate to privately purchase him for $70,000, with a 50% semen share, at the 2023 Australian Sheep and Wool Show, Bendigo.

“This young ram stood out at weaning and has continued to grow into a tremendously well-balanced young sire. He was used at Wiringa Park as a ram lamb, both via AI and naturally, such was the confidence we had in him. He has all the traits of a true modern stud sire – structurally very correct with short pasterns, great squareness, and wool that oozes nourishment, lustre, staple length and density.”— Allan Hobley, Wiringa Park

His wool quality — particularly between the hips and at the back of the head — is exceptional and hard to find elsewhere.

Sire Evaluation Trial – South Australia
WP 220450 was entered in the Sire Evaluation Trial in SA, where his results further confirmed what we’ve been seeing in his progeny right across the country. With lambs now on the ground in NSW, VIC, SA and WA, his offspring are proving to be highly productive, uncomplicated animals with excellent fleece weights and strong carcase traits.

He consistently produces a high percentage of top-end animals, with a notably low cull rate. His ability to perform across a wide range of environments reinforces his value as a reliable, industry-relevant sire. Progeny show a strong balance of carcase, wool quality, and fleece cut.

🧬Proven Semen Sire - Lachlan Merinos 220118
One of the most influential sires in the industry currently!

Lachlan 220118 stood out early as a ram lamb, showing such promise that he was selected for both Artifical Insemination (AI) and Embryo Transfer (ET) as a ram lamb.

From the outset, his correctness, balance and presence have been exceptional! He stands square and correct on all four feet, with structure and symmetry that consistently impress. His hindquarters are particularly well shaped and his overall stucture is balanced and correct. His width flows smoothly from front to back, complemented by a soft, pure muzzle.

He carries a long, soft, free growing fleece on a loose, uncomplicated skin, with exceptional whiteness that continues right through to the belly. He is the type of sire that suits joining across a wide range of ewe types, offering versatility without compromise.

Lachlan 220118 is the BEST RAM we've ever bred, and his breeding performance has been outstanding. His progeny are consistently well balanced, with excellent back ends, depth and length. They carry thick, waxy, white wool with excellent staple length and lock, on uncomplicated skins.

At our 2025 On Property sale, 19 sons sold to top at $12,500 averaging $5861.

At our 2024 On Property Sale, 18 of his progeny sold to a top of $13,000, averaging $5,222.

Over the past two years, Lachlan 220118 has been widely used across the industry in 17 Merino studs and 4 commercial ram breeding operations. Resulting extremely high accuracy in his ASBV’s which encouragingly have continued to improve as more progeny are being entered.

He has also been entered in the 2025 Drop South West Slopes Sire Evaluation. This will provide even more robust data on his performance, including for traits that are otherwise hard to measure. We're excited to see how he compares against industry benchmarks and to offer even greater confidence to our clients through increased accuracy.

Video of 220118 as a 2 yr old can be viewed in the comments.
