My name’s Desiree, but you can call me Des :)

I’m a Wife and a Mum of two beautiful girls, as well as the Owner and Edible Art Creator at Des Bakes & Decorates. I’ve had a passion for creating cakes and treats for family and friends since I was a teenager. My other love is in event planning and styling from experience gained from over 15 years in the events industry. With my collective acquired s

kills, expertise, and experience, I have loved helping others celebrate their loved ones on special occasions and milestones by easing their overwhelm that is ‘Party Planning’, and creating delicious, unique, and thoughtfully designed, memorable works of edible art. Everything created in my kitchen is made with love, an acute attention to detail, and is a little bit artsy. My Cakes are baked fresh and frosted with smooth, silky, eat-from-the-bowl Swiss Meringue Buttercream. My Sugar Cookies are custom decorated with my Signature Homemade Marshmallow Fondant - none of that store-bought fondant. I can’t believe my first year as a baking business has gone by so quickly, and what a year it's been! Being a part of the Australian Party Stylist of the Year Awards for the 3rd year in a row wasn’t part of my plans, but I’m glad I was! 🥰

Fun Fact: I was a Prize Partner this year, creating custom hand-painted Vanilla Sugar Cookies with my Signature Homemade Marshmallow Fondant for all the Winners. It’s pretty amusing that I’m the recipient of one of these myself! 😄

My Signature Vanilla Bean Cakes and Cupcakes are best eaten at room temperature 😋👌🏼

Do you prefer dense mud cakes, fluffy sponge cakes, or "just right" moist yet fluffy cakes?

I only use quality Vanilla Bean paste - I just love that you can see those little speckles of Vanilla goodness 😍

👊🏼 Liam’s Hulk-SMASHing 5th Birthday 💚

One thing I love about creating these celebration cakes and treats for my Clients, is the meaningful connections and stories they share with me.

It isn’t my story to share, but I could just tell how much love Liam’s Dad has for his son and wife 💚 His lovely wife sent him on pick-up duty, and I learnt how Liam came to be. I couldn’t help but feel grateful to have been able to create something special for Liam and his amazing parents to celebrate the day of his birth 🥰

His Dad also shared how he and his wife kept a keepsake from every birthday that Liam has had and will likely give it to him on his 18th Birthday. This year, they could keep the acrylic “Happy Birthday” fropper from and The Hulk figurine (which was Liam’s toy and current favourite character). How sweet is that?! 🥹🥰

Meaningful Edible Art - that’s what I love creating - with emphasis on “Meaningful”. A cake/ cookie/ cakesicle/ cupcake is just that - what makes it special is incorporating something that means something to the recipient. It doesn’t matter what the design is - as long as it’s going to delight you/ your loved one or because it’ll represent them in some way.

Who knew that one Hulk (Smash) Cake for a gorgeous 5yo could be so fun? 😄

Boys’ Cakes are more challenging for my girl-wired brain, but Liam’s Mum gave me free reign on the design after a few suggestions, and I was stoked to be able to get creative 💪🏼

Whilst creating the cake, though, I kept questioning my design decisions - sometimes my perfectionism impedes my creativity. I ended up asking my husband for his opinion after I had the finished and perfectly executed cake - which I couldn’t help but think was missing…SOMETHING 🤔 I just didn’t know what it was! Thank goodness I asked him because he suggested for Hulk to actually SMASH the cake! 😮

DUHHH!!! 💁🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😅 It was SO obvious but I was so caught up in the notion of “perfect” that I didn’t see that I could use “Hulk - SMASH” as a literal design - until he said it! 👏🏼

We all need help sometimes - a different perspective. Whether it be stepping away and trying to see it from a different angle or seeking another person’s perspective.

Not only did this make it look way cooler, but it also allowed for Liam (and his parents) to get in on the SMASH-ing experience and do it themselves on purpose to get Hulk’s fists “dirty” the day of the celebration! 👊🏼💚

I’m so grateful that Salvador’s Mum chose me to create his Pokémon-themed birthday cake to celebrate his 6th Birthday with his friends 🥰

The Cake Brief:

Pokeball
Signature Chocolate Cake with Strawberry Swiss Meringue Buttercream, and frosted with Vanilla Bean Swiss Meringue Buttercream

Creating this “OG Cake-top-forward Pokéball” design was easy, but executing it was more technically complex than I had anticipated. If frosting the cake (half red, half white) wasn’t challenging enough (watch my previous Reel to see how I did it), I had to do that step for both sides of the cake.

Next, I measured and cut with exact precision my homemade marshmallow fondant - which I used for the entire front of the cake to ensure the Pokéball was perfectly defined (the red was painted on using edible paint).

I created the marshmallow fondant Pikachu, “6”, and Salvador’s name, and black “lines” by cutting the shapes out, then painting and adding the detail before adhering them onto the cake.

The last image is the digital cake design I created for Salvador’s Mum 🤓

Seeing the sheer delight on Salvador's face when I delivered the cake - and seeing him embrace his Mum in the fullest, most grateful hug, was THE BEST feeling 🥲 It made all of the effort worthwhile 🥰

I find Cartoon/Character Cakes challenging, but I do love a challenge 😀💪🏼

Especially when the Birthday Boy is a friend of my daughter's. He's just the sweetest 6yo boy you'll meet 🥰

I knew I needed to create a cool cake design for him. His Mum gave me the Cake Brief, which included having a Pokéball 👌🏼 I researched and scoured Instagram and the interwebs, then realised no one had created a cake-top-forward Pokémon-themed cake design yet 🤩🙌🏼

Drawing this design was easy. Creating it was more technically complex AND took longer than I anticipated, but standing back, seeing it finished, and then seeing the sheer delight on Salvador's face when I delivered the cake - and seeing him embrace his Mum in the fullest, most grateful hug, was THE BEST feeling 🥲 It made all of the effort worthwhile 🥰

Thanks for the best Cake Guide! It was the MVP 🙌🏼 I would've taken A LOT longer without it! 😅

🕸 Just your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman swinging his way onto my feed 🕷

This cake was special 💙 This was for my ex-Boss' Grandson.

Meeting my ex-Boss in 2013 literally changed the course of my life path for the better. Somehow, he saw potential in me and gave me a chance. He even gifted me my first and only Wilton Cake Decorating set after I shared with him my passion for baking. Then he asked me to make Tiramisu for his daughter's wedding guests 😊 I never would've needed to make this Spiderman cake if not for her support all these years later ❤️

The lesson here: Don't underestimate the impact of having faith in someone. It makes us believe that we are capable of anything we set our minds to. Even if we ourselves aren't sure we can achieve it...yet 😄 We all need a little push sometimes 😊

Also, if you have a little faith in your Cake Maker, and let us weave our web of creativity, we'll probably give you an even better outcome. Everybody wins 👌🏼 And you become your child's hero because you gifted them a fabulous cake to celebrate just how great you think they are 🥰💙❤️

She had an absolute blast getting to celebrate with her friends and family - the first time getting to celebrate with classmates after the Covid-restricted and postponed parties of the last 3 birthdays. Of course, I had to bring the goodies for my girl 🩷

🔥 Hot Tip: If you have a bunch of kids running around, Mini Cupcakes and Cookies are handy for grabby hands and snacky kids on the go 👌🏼

My 6yo changed her mind about 5 times in 2 weeks about how I should decorate the cake 🥴 Not gonna lie, I almost referred her to a few other cakers I know 😂😅

She even had a meltdown about it the night before cos I was going to do what she told me to do a few days before that! 🤯 I was the one on the verge of a meltdown! 😭🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ I convinced her to trust me, and thankfully, she loved it! She worried for nothing! 🤦🏻‍♀️😂😅

Kids! The things we put ourselves through to make them happy! Was it worth it? 🤔 Yes. It will always be worth it 🩷 Even though they're crazy 🤪

🧜🏻‍♀️ Mermaid cookie designs are my fave 😍 But I do wish I could work this fast! 😆

If you guessed this was the cookie that made me question my sanity in my previous post, you were absolutely right 😂👌🏼

My love for wafer paper sequin mermaid tails may make me lose my marbles one day 😂 Today is not that day, though 😄

I used .mill to colour the wafer paper and used a hole puncher. Then, each sequin/confetti was stuck on individually on my homemade marshmallow fondant I prepared earlier. If you would like to try this out, I pray you have the patience of a saint 🙏🏼😄 God speed 🫡

Guess which cookie made me question my sanity 😂😅➡️

I loooved the idea and the end result, but I called it quits after finishing 3 in the same design, and knowing that there were more than enough for a few more of these to be missed 😄

I am actually pleased that I perservered, though, cos it turned out to be my daughter's favourite cookie 🥰
