The Central Asian Shepherd Dog (Alabai) is one of the world’s oldest livestock guardian breeds, with origins dating back over 4,000 years across Central Asia. Shaped by natural selection—not modern breeding—these powerful dogs protected flocks, families and caravans from wolves, bears and thieves across the harsh steppes and mountains.

Their heritage reaches into the ancient Iranian world, where the Zoroastrian Avesta, particularly the Vendidad, honours shepherd and guardian dogs as sacred protectors of livestock and society. Avesta describes guardian dogs that are widely considered the ancestors of today’s Central Asian livestock guardians.

Fearless, intelligent and fiercely loyal, the Alabai remains a living link to one of humanity’s oldest partnerships with dogs.
