The season is kicking off. We are shuffling a few of our elite pure breds and combinations. This Big boy is getting 2 great highly productive elite hens. The 2 hens are full sisters to each other and not related to the c**k, so we can effectively perfornance record these great bloodlines. Lots of great combibations put into place.

Even though we are in the middle of a cold wet winter, we are past the shortest day of the year with daylength increasing. Yes that means the breeders are starting with their first eggs for the 2026-2027 breeding season.

From Farm to Vietnam - A Proud Ostrich Industry Journey

One of the many highlights of our recent visit to Vietnam was seeing ostrich featured prominently on restraurant menus and enjoying some truly delicious dishes that reinforced what we've always known.

Ostrich is one of the highest quality, healthiest and tender red meats available.

We were delighted to discover Ostrich & Pate Banh Mi being served in the beautiful streets of Hoi An, and later enjoyed Grilled Ostrich with Green Pepper Skewers during our visit to Ba Na Hills. It was fantastic to see consumers embracing ostrich as a premium and flavoursome dining option.

What made this experience even more special was knowing that Hastings Ostrich Farms has played a small part in helping build Vietnams ostrich industry over the years.

Back in 2004/2005, we exported more than 1,000 of Hastings Ostrich Farms high-quality genetics to Da Nang, where they became foundation breeding stock for the developing industry. Then again in 2019, we supplied further shipments of elite breeder genetics to establish a high-performance breeding flock and support the continued growth of ostrich production in Vietnam.

To now be walking through Vietnam and seeing ostrich products available and being enjoyed by locals and tourists alike is incredibly rewarding. lt is a testament to the dedication of farmers, breeders, and industry psrticipants who have worked to grow and improve highly efficient and sustainable ostrich production over many years.

Seeing the results firsthand - from breeding programs to menu items enjoyed by thousands- is something we are immensely proud of.

The journey from our farms in Australia to the tables of Vietnam continues, and it was wonderful to experience the success of an industry we have helped support for more than two decades.

Heres a story l had not heard. Can anyone add more detail to this.

No seriously. This isn’t a piss-take from Kath & Kim or some forgotten Russell Coight episode.

Back in the 1890s, South Australia apparently had a real-life bushranger nicknamed the “Birdman of the Coorong” who robbed people while riding around on a bloody ostrich.

His name was John Peggotty, an Irish-born thief who stood about 1.1 metres tall and originally worked as a chimney sweep because he could squeeze into tight spaces. Which honestly already sounds like the setup for the weirdest Aussie supervillain of all time.

Things escalated when he ended up in South Africa and apparently became obsessed with ostrich racing, which was an actual sport back then. Because the 1800s were just built different.

After moving to Australia, Peggotty allegedly started robbing people across South Australia while riding his ostrich around shirtless, covered in stolen gold jewellery and waving pistols around like some deranged colonial Mad Max character.

And the wildest bit? Ostriches in South Australia were actually a real thing. Rich people imported them for the feather trade because fancy hats in Europe and America were obsessed with ostrich plumes at the time. When the industry collapsed, heaps of the birds apparently just got dumped into the bush.

So for a period in Australian history, there was genuinely a chance you could be travelling through the scrub near the Coorong and see a tiny Irish bushranger sprinting across the horizon on a giant bird wearing stolen necklaces.

Absolute peak Australia.

Some wonderful hens were delivered for their retirement at a function centre. These old girls are as quiet as lambs and as friendly as the family Labrador. We haven't been used to delivering small loads. We swapped the B-double trailers on this job and dusted off our 35-year-old custom float for the job!ii
