High protein Caesar salad inspired lunch today. The eggs are fresh from our hens and the cos lettuce was picked straight from the garden.

We love swapping the croutons for chickpeas and the Caesar dressing for a light Greek yoghurt dressing with a fresh squeeze of lemon and some society garlic.

We had a lot of fun experimenting with cladding options on the coop!

We started with the last of our leftover hempcrete (though we didn't have quite as much as we thought, or maybe the coop just kept growing ๐Ÿ˜†). From there we tried our hand at wattle and daub, another traditional building method we really enjoyed. It's a slower process, but it's cheap and sustainable. Both the hempcrete and wattle and daub walls are finished with a lime and clay render, which keeps them breathable but watertight and hard wearing. The last two sides are clad in blackbutt timber from the local mill, quick and simple to install.

Between the natural walls the coop gives our chickens real protection from predators, and keeps them comfy no matter the weather. This project has really given us more confidence and skills in building structures independently.

Hi, We're Ashleigh and Jarrod and with our two young children we live on PatchFolk Farm, on Biripi Country in Wingham, NSW.
As young adults finding our way in the cities of Australia we were becoming increasingly worried about the world we lived in. Climate uncertainty, mental health challenges, humanitarian inequality and a food system built on monocultures and monopolies rather than diversity. Although we cannot tackle all those challenges, we knew we wanted something different for us and our children, time spent outdoors together, growing and sharing food, observing and living alongside nature.
So we started building the lifestyle we wanted with the hope to;
* Raise kids who feel genuinely connected to the earth and their community.
* Reduce our environmental footprint.
* Leave our farm healthier and more alive than when we arrived.

Stay tuned to watch as we take steps to create a healthier world for the kids of the future ๐ŸŒฟ

When the wattle is blooming you know Spring is just around the corner โ˜€๏ธ

Time to make sure all the winter tasks are crossed off and we begin planting our seeds for the spring garden.

Meet our rainbow laying flock ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿฅš

These girls are a mix of Araucanas, Marans, and Easter Eggers (Araucana cross Plymouth Rock) birds. These are colourful, medium sized chickens, that love cuddles and run over to eat scratch mix from our hands. Our hens have been selected for their egg colour and calm, gentle temperaments.

This flock will predominantly lay first generation Easter Eggers, and when the hens are grown they'll surprise us with their delightful coloured eggs, ranging from olive, to dark brown, blue, or even pink.

These girls and their colourful eggs bring so much joy to our days.

Meet our Plymouth Rocks ๐Ÿ“

We bought our first dual-purpose, heritage Plymouth Rock hens home two years ago, and fell for them straight away. They are large, placid girls who are always first in line to eat scratch mix straight from our hands. They're wonderful layers too, giving us beautiful light pink eggs.

Our rooster and many of our hens carry the barred gene, giving them black and white stripes which we think are just beautiful. The deep emerald sheen on our black hens is not to be forgotten either.

This gentle, hardworking breed is a real favourite around here.

The coop has been our biggest independant building project yet. Every part of it, digging the foundations, putting up the framework, the roof, and the cladding, we did ourselves.

Inside, it's split into three separate rooms, each with its own two runs. The idea is to rotate the flock between them. One run gets a rest to grow feed while they're busy enjoying the other. With three separate spaces, we've got room for three flocks, all with their own home.

Stay tuned, we'll be introducing you to each flock soon ๐Ÿ“
