I love being inspired by cook books and you know you have found a good one when you are straight away into the kitchen! With back to school starting I couldnโ€™t resist trying out these sweet potato, cranberry oat bars.

They came together quickly are tasty and packed full of goodness without the extra sugar and chocolate often loaded in store brought muesli bars.

Most importantly they got the kid tick of approval โœ”๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿป๐Ÿง’๐Ÿผ

If youโ€™re in the market for a new cook book with simple, healthy recipes I would highly recommended โ€˜everyday food as medicineโ€™ from Dr Kerryn Phelps and Jaime Rose Chambers.

Sustainability is about more than just plants its impacts all aspects of our lifestyle and today was about Christmas craft๐ŸŽ„

Salt dough is one of many sustainable ways to celebrate Christmas. Salt dough can be made into ornaments, gift tags or gift ornaments ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽ

We love it because
๐ŸŽ It is an activity that nurtures bonding and memory making
๐ŸŽ It uses pantry items making it cheap and easy
๐ŸŽ No waste is produced. After Christmas we can keep these for future christmases or compost them as they are made of 100% edible ingredients.

Salt dough
4C flour
1C Salt
2C water

1. Add all ingredients together and mix until it combines.
2. Knead until a smooth but not sticky dough is formed.
3 Divide into 4 sections and roll out to about 1cm thick and cut out desired shapes. Remember to add a hole if you wish to hang them.
4. Bake in over for about 2 hours at 120C or until firm.
5. Leave to cool and then paint.
6. Once dry decorate your home or gift as you please ๐Ÿ˜Š

* for my paint I used 1/4C flour mixed with a splash of food dye and 1/2C water.

Our newly planted garden near the house is booming and giving me great joy. It is a huge mix of young perennials, young trees and flowering and fruiting annuals.

The plants are doing great, growing strong and withstanding the heat, in the soil the chickens have created being in this area for the last 14 months.

By continually adding cut grass and wood chip to this area, the chickens raised the soil depth by 5 - 35cm across this space. Chia, pumpkins, tomatoes, sunflowers and cosmos have sprouted from the chicken scraps, helping to fill in the garden while our plants grow. They also provide w**d suppression, cool and shade our slower growing perennials.

All set for a morning of hemping!

This is a big project we have been working on behind the scenes to create a space that is more functional and comfy for our chickens. On the north side of the coop we are using the leftover hempcrete materials to provide extra insulation.
