My Dedek (grandad, Stan), Grandma (Anna) Had 4 children, Mary, Susie, Slafko (Johnny, my dad) in Melbourne. In 1967 they moved to a little old town called Winkie and brought a vineyard and a stone fruit orchard- peaches, nectarines and apricots. That’s when they had their 4th child Micheal. Growing up on the block meant everyone was expected to work, many long days were spent working in the cuttin
g shed or down the block picking fruit or just working. Having to either cut apricots on Christmas Day or unstacking and stacking up trays. My dad did his apprenticeship with my Dedek and worked with him for 10 years before in 1997 our Dedek passed sadly away. My father had to step up and take over the vineyard and orchards. In the early 2000s Slafko planted more peaches and nectarines so this meant there was so much more to cut and dry, but honestly nothing beats the weekends and early mornings in the cutting shed with family. In 2014, I met Brad, after a few dates before I knew it he was apart of the family. There was no time at all before dad put Brad to work getting him out on the block with us picking and cutting fruit. This also included a lot of work after Brad finished work, let’s just say Brads not to fond of it. After a couple of years of thinking on and off about packing and selling dried fruit we thought why not. In April 2021 we started up The Winkie Peach Patch. After a few months of planning our business we launched on Facebook, with our page growing every day. We were so overwhelmed with how busy we were. We now have our fruit in many parts of the Riverland and it is amazing. Who thought a little idea would become so big, we’re loving every moment of it.
