McHenry Hohnen

McHenry Hohnen An evolution of wine with a unique reflection of the land. With the wisdom of three generations our f Welcome to McHenry Hohnen Vintners!

With the wisdom of three generations of vignerons and winemakers we take a purists approach; focussing on single vineyard wines, biological farming and a “hands off” philosophy to winemaking. McHenry Hohnen was founded in 2004 by pioneering Margaret River winemaker and 3rd generation biological farmer David Hohnen and his brother-in-law, grape-grower and wine retailer Murray McHenry. Our team is h

eaded by young and progressive winemaker Trent Carroll, who eshews technology in the winemaking process and viticulturist Mike Sleegers whose bio-dynamic growing principles have shown proven results. Collectively McHenry Hohnen incorporates pre-industrial practices which exemplifies a new generation of winemaking. With an ethos of quality over quantity, we create small lots of expressive, authentic, fine wines. We endeavour to engage and educate wine drinkers on the merits of pre-industrial wine growing and grape handling via the unadulterated quality of flavours in our sustainably produced wines. In our portfolio you will see hand-picked alternative varieties, wild ferments and full flavours.

On our certified biodynamic vineyard, nothing goes to waste. Every by-product finds its way back into the system - including the grape marc, which we put to work on the farm, feeding back into the soil and completing the cycle.

A big push over the last few years has been growing the farm side of our property here in the south of the south-west. But the dream goes back much further than that. There's something quietly satisfying about watching it take shape - seeing our certified biodynamic vineyard and the farm work together, each one making the other better.

Ben is a man of many talents.

His journey with McHenry Hohnen has come full circle. A long-time friend of the Hohnen family, Ben first joined the winery in its formative years. He helped build both the vineyard and the brand from the ground up.

After five years of hands-on experience, he returned to the Barossa to work on his family’s fifth-generation farm. But the pull of Margaret River proved too strong.

Ben later came back to the region, bringing with him a renewed appreciation for its distinct soils, growing conditions and laid-back lifestyle.

He spent five years at Vasse Felix, managing vineyards in the cooler southern sub-region of Karridale. During this time, he and his family also purchased their own property and reconnected with their sheep farming heritage.

After moving into vineyard and livestock contracting, Ben was invited back to McHenry Hohnen in 2023. Two decades after his first chapter began.

Today, Ben leads viticulture and broader farm operations. He brings deep practical knowledge, a hands-on approach and a holistic understanding of the land. His work brings together vines, livestock and regenerative farming with genuine care and purpose.
