Pasture Management with Farmer Dan – Today’s Topic: Turnips

Turnips aren’t just cattle feed — they’re also a great tool for improving soil health.

Their large taproot drives deep into the soil, helping to:

* Break up compacted ground
* Improve water infiltration
* Create channels for future pasture roots
* Bring nutrients from deeper soil layers closer to the surface

As the roots and crop residues break down after grazing, they return valuable organic matter and nutrients back into the soil. The cattle then do their part by depositing manure and urine, effectively recycling those nutrients across the paddock.

The result? Better soil structure, improved nutrient cycling, and a healthier pasture ready for the next phase of growth.
