Reduce the cow’s energy supply 2-3 weeks before drying off to prepare for the dry period. The actual drying off should be done by stopping milking abruptly. Keep an eye on the udders in the first few days after stopping milking.

Before stopping milking, the cow's energy supply should be reduced over a period of 2-3 weeks. This is especially true for cows with a production level of 30 kg or more. Reducing the energy level before drying off means that the length of the dry period should be decided in good time before the start of the dry period.

🇫🇮 The Purola herd (Mikkeli, Finland) with 36 RDC cows has achieved an excellent level of production, 12,800 kg ECM (11,800 kg milk, 4.3% fat and 3.7% protein) based on dedicated long-term breeding and skilled cow management.

The herd owners from two generations Marjukka, Are and Jere Lautiainen appreciate that RDC cows are healthy and efficient users of forage. They have seen that RDC cows are probably not the highest producers in the first lactation but from the second lactation onwards, they reach their full potential.

As they themselves summarize the key reason for keeping RDC cows so well: “Yield during the first lactation may be modest, but from the second lactation onwards it usually exceeds 10,000 kg ECM. Cows with this production pattern also tend to have a long productive lifespan.”

Closely following VikingGenetics’ breeding advice has helped dairy farm Salaš Farma boost its milk quality and production, claiming the title of top herd in Croatia 🐄 🇭🇷

“Following a breeding strategy using VikingHolstein X-Vik™ sexed semen and the mating program VikMate, has helped us to achieve a balanced cow with the highest possible Nordic Total Merit Index (NTM)”, says farm manager Berislav Vulic.

As a result, the herd’s milk composition has improved, along with a boost to herd health that reduced the culling rate of cows from 40% to under 30%.
