Unseasonable showers and thunderstorms are expected to impact inland parts of eastern Australia over the next week.
These showers and storms will first develop near an inland trough that should form on Friday and weaken on Sunday. A second, stronger trough will move over New South Wales and southern Queensland early next week, bringing further showers and storms.
However, details of the location and amount of rainfall from these systems are still evolving. Different computer weather models, which help predict the weather, are showing a range of possibilities, depending on where the troughs form and how they develop.
The Australian (ACCESS) and European (EC) models both show an increase in rainfall over inland parts of NSW and southern Qld, but the locations of the heaviest falls vary. They also agree that only low rainfall totals are to be expected over South Australia.
There is less model agreement about Victoria, with the Australian model forecasting more rainfall over the Northern Plains.
Bureau meteorologists use these models, along with other computer data, observations and local knowledge, to create the official rainfall forecast. As the models and observations continue to update over the coming days, so will our forecasts.
