Last month’s book club discussed FLAVOUR - through memories, favourites, and exciting ideas for flavour combinations.

This month we’re asking in your experience “Does vegan food have enough flavour?”

This playful and informative, discussion takes the flavour conversation further by framing the question around your own experiences dining out or creating your own vegan food.

For reference and guidance about what vegan food can be, we’ll dip into two fabulous cook books.

Our two vegan cookbooks are:
Melbourne’s Shannon Martinez’s 3rd cook book ‘VEGAN with BITE’, and mid north coast local Pandora Colledge’s NOURISHED BY NATURE.

Shannon is a hugely influential vegan chef (but not vegan herself) as the owner of two plant-based businesses in Melbourne - Smith + Daughters and Smith + Deli.
Pandora is a well known and respected local vegan cook, and nutritionalist who runs vegan cooking classes on the mid north coast.

Keeping in my that flavours are hard to describe and define - and very personal - let’s gather to discuss our experiences, expectations, and flavour highs about one of the least talked about cuisines.

If you don’t own either of these cookbooks you have a few options - do a search online for reviews; I will be sending ALL ticket holders a Pdf of several pages of each of their cookbooks; try your local library.

My pick for

The fourth book in Maya Angelou’s sux volumes of autobiography.

As a Black woman she has known discrimination and extreme piverty, but also hope and joy, achievement and celebration.

This fourth volune finds Maya Angelou immersed in the world of Black writers and artists in Harlem, working in the civil rights movement with Dr Martin Luther King.

Our topic for February book club is FLAVOUR!

Here’s a flavour combo I really like - pan fry fresh strawberries and their natural sugars become highlighted - these I poured a bit of local honey over just so they wouldn’t stick to the pan and burn.

What are your fave flavour combinations - or ones you really dislike?

It’s all up for discussion on Saturday Feb 28.

Let’s jump into 2026 with a discussion about FLAVOUR.

Flavours are so hard to describe and define, even for seasoned (excuse the pun) food writers.
Spicy, earthy, grassy, floral, sulphorous....

What flavours excite your palate?

Do you cling to the same recipes and familiar flavours when you order a meal?

What flavours do you think go together?
What flavours do you love, that none of your friends or family like?
Does your choice of diet influence your choice?
Do your tastebuds follow a pattern, or are they constantly craving new flavour sensations?

Author Niki Segnit drew up a list of 99 flavours for her Flavour Thesaurus.
She could have added thousands more, she said, but a book is a book and you have to stop somewhere!

Flavour isn’t an exact science and it resists fitting into neat categories.

Niki says, “Flavour pairings are driven by history, culture, chefs’ wisdom, and personal prejudice”

Let’s discuss this on Saturday, FEB 28 at 10:30am at Palate & Ply Cafe.
*Our first evening book club will be in March.

New format for book club in 2026!

Book club is back in February - yes, finally!

A few things have changed in 2026 - here’s an update. 📚

You might have noticed I’ve changed from Bite Book Club, to Coffs Foodies Book Club on our socials.

This way people instantly know we’re local to Coffs Harbour AND that we are a food focused book club.

Our format is changing too. As well as our Saturday morning meet ups over ☕️ coffee, I am adding a Friday evening option 🍷 for people who prefer to meet up after work and/or have commitments on Saturdays.
*** Evening book club starts in March ***

We’re not a cook book club. You might hate cooking but love eating. Join us!

Book titles about food and food culture can be exy and sometimes hard to find in your local library.

So each month I’ll suggest a book or food topic to discuss.
Want to buy the book, great! If not, think about the topic and come and share your views and experience.

Now, the biggest change!

I’m introducing a $5 fee per meeting* this will be part of your online RSVP and guarantee a seat at the table.

Everyone’s time is valuable and this commits people to show up. No shows are frustrating and empty pre-booked seats at the table is just ... uncool for me and for the venue.

THE GOOD NEWS IS... you won’t be out of pocket. Your prepaid $5 will cover a regular sized coffee for you on arrival. So the only people out of pocket are the no shows. Their funds can buy cake for us!

*For evening meet ups your $5 will go toward shared bar snacks.

New dates are the 4th Saturday morning of each month, and the 4th Friday of each month.
You can attend either or both.

Friday evenings are at The Plantation Hotel (front tables near window) Pacific Hwy, Coffs Harbour - 6pm-7:15pm

Saturdays are at Palate & Ply in Vernon St, Coffs Harbour - 10:30am-11:45am.

Through food we can connect in so many ways.

I hope you’ll join me for some delicious future discussions over coffee or a glass of wine.

We’ve all missed each other, and I can’t wait to get back to juicy discussions about all things food.

So excited by the delivery of On Sundays by Dave Verheul. This book has won an ADBA Award and although I never ate at his restaurant when I googled some of the intro pages my food loving heart fell in love with his mindset and the context of the “chapters” inside the book.
