Popes Produce is an urban market garden growing seasonal produce in a suburban backyard. We base our practice on permaculture principles, making sure we nourish the soil, enhance biodiversity in order to grow healthy produce which in turn grows happy healthy humans.

The light is low…
Need for citrus is high.

Soils ain’t soils. For veggie growing in the home context, you’ll want something in the pH range of 6-7.5. This means that the plants have maximum access to everything they need to grow into nutrient dense food. Home made seedling mix used here is a lovely happy balance.
Store bought mixes may say everything on the label, but need more time to age. If the pH reading is up high in the 8.5 & higher range, macro nutrients will be locked up & all you’ll see is stunted plant growth, which is really demoralizing. Trust me in this one.
Well aged home made compost hits the mark, which makes me a little giddy & pretty chuffed with being sooo patient. More details in an up & coming newsletter.

Don’t forget that plants can also do some of the work, radishes are great for opening up heavier soils & provide a living cover in the off season- hurray!

Make the $25 investment in one of the pH soil testing kits, just helps take some of the guesswork out of growing food & saves time avoiding pitfalls of working with crazy pH!

A little cutting loose for the beginning of the week…

The girls loved a little free ranging this morning whilst the coop scoopings added an extra oomph to our compost.

Soil is literally the soul of the garden, and with guardians like this, must be onto a good thing;)
(Little Golden Crown snake was curled up under the tin lid on the compost to deter the brush turkey from spreading it all around)

And of course - happy soil leads to happy produce with sunshine, time and patience. This one is off to dinner.

Since many of us learn through doing…greenhouse benchtop is a study in propagation for spring. Now let’s see if they’ll start setting roots….

Wish me luck!!!

Playing with food - preserved beans from back in December 2024….

Laughing at the gift of mulch mountains (2 pictured & 2 more 100m away) literally as tall as me & only me to move them over all the 1/2 acre of school gardens I manage.

Trying new stuff - made a zine with my kiddo and encouraging all of us to get outside & explore (available in our website store).

Annnnd our 1st fruit tree pruning workshop of the season. We’re trialling a sliding scale for ticketing to make it as accessible as possible. Money may come & go, but skills are for life. (More info via link in the bio!)

What’s something you’re trialling maybe outside your comfort zone? Anything like eating food from your cupboard a year & a half old????

What a glorious trip into better farming, food & ecological care thanks to the amazing and Stewart Family for hosting 2 gigantic days of talks, field workshops & generally providing the space to chat with a stranger and find out more of what happens within caring for the country and people that feed us.

Listened to incredible experiences of what is possible in schools, real food for all, what magic happens when gardens & kitchens combine superpowers, microbial wellbeing, soil health is public health, natural building and all the spaces in between.

Super happy not to have much reception or battery power as they left most of the white noise at the gate.

Thankful to be an earlybird & see the majesty of sparkling skies.

Jotted down notes on the way home thanks to the holistic management framework to put into context of the days of full immersion.

(Also love to see any other festival commit to the zero waste policy of this outstanding event. Resuse everything and plenty of drinking water for all!)

What a glorious day for conversations!

I had a really lovely lady over for a garden consult at ours. We walked through the market garden jungle, dahlia bank & basil hedgerow to chat her families needs on minimum time and small helpers.

Loads of notes taken, overwhelm pared back to anticipation and an armful of autumn greens picked in front of her to digest along with notions of starting their own garden.

Yay for outdoor adventures!

It’s a trip when you can watch birds fly below you.

I like to think of this as our little skygarden. In reality it’s a 100m2 rooftop garden. Why? Exactly. Just to see if it could be done. The strawberries have been cranking since September & the birds live a good frolic in the birdbath.

Also an excellent spot for flowers. Soil depth is 30cm, so there in lie some interesting maintenance issues.
The garden is built up over many many layers of drainage cells, geotech fabric & waterproofing membrane to keep below nice & dry.
If you want to give your husband a heart attack - take a pitchfork or spade out there.

Traps the last rays of our autumnal days & offers up mighty fine reading/ nap locations.

A little bit of experimentation & commitment goes a long way.

‘Playground of ideas’ seems totally appropriate to this little enterprise.

A term I heard on a podcast today, credited to a permaculturalist discussing the part urban farms can play. Not quite large enough to supply daily fruit and veg to the masses, we can however demonstrate what it takes to grow real food, offer taste testings (honestly one little rocket plant packed with more flavour than a whole packet of supermarket stuff) and all the inspiration required to grow on your own terms.
