In just four years, principles applied every year sees 2025 with our highest kidding efficiencies, highest average birth weights, and most kids on the ground in the shortest time, all from paddock joining and paddock kidding during the worst WA winter weather we've recorded.
Multiparous does 5 years+: 137%, average birthweight: 4kg
Multiparous does (2022): 147%, average birthweight: 3.8kg
Secondiparous does (2023): 100%, average birthweight: 3.5kg
Primiparous does (2023, 2024): 150%, 3.4kg
Our first kidding year was a baptism by fire (28 multiparous 5-year-old plus does, 9 3-year-old maidens), we had 117% kidding rate with average birthweight of 3.5kg. Dystocia, still-borns, exposure, and constant 24/7 getting kids to suckle and dams to mother up!
Consistent application of these principles is key:
1. high birth weight sires
2. high post-weaning daily weight gain sires
3. fast-maturing sires (capable of joining at six months old)
4. sires from does with exceptional maternal instinct
4. minimum doe joining weight 33kg
5. fast-growing does (reaching joining weight at 7 months) and
6. maternal nutrition (protein and minerals).
Along with standard conformation requirements. Producing a fit-for-purpose and robust Angora goat growing soft, lustrous, fine, high-quality mohair regardless of age.
Our next post explores the association between doe joining weights and kid birth weights.
