“Every once in a while you encounter an extraordinary patch of land, one that varies greatly from the surrounding landscape, one that is impossibly unique in so many ways, this is one such place”. Through many years of planting then working the vineyard and farm an innate connection to the land has formed, a respect for the land and just how much it gives became apparent. Chris

planting of the vines on our dame has been done with thoughtfulness and sensitivity to the land, the diversity is such that there are five different plots of vines totalling a mere 15 acres, ensuing profoundly structured wine pulsating with energy from this carefully nurtured land.

“Flashy, reductive and mineral, screaming with electricity and tension. Aromas of grapefruit, passion fruit, sea spray, struck match, lemon rind and crushed stones. The light- to medium bodied palate is vibrant with taut, linear acidity and underlying power Two days on skins before pressing adds structure and depth. A terroir-driven Sauvignon Blanc reminiscent of Pessac-Leognan.”

Over the past few years we have noticed a shift at the farm. The larger birds such as these cockatoos, predatory birds like hawks, owls and eagles have increased substantially in numbers taking up residence in the 50+ acres of conservation bushland on the farm…at the same time the little silver eyes who feast on our grapes have decreased. This year with no marri blossom yet in flower we utilised every bird net we had…however the little silver eyes are no where to be found.

Thrilled that our 2023 Petit Lot Chardonnay has been named in .suckling Top 100 Wines of Australia for 2024. Our first time being included on this prestigious list!

Here is what Associate Editor had to say…

“A very attractive and flashy nose with mineral notes of flint and granite underlined by aromas of lemon peel, salt brine, lemon blossoms and lime curd. The palate is medium-bodied, energetic acidity giving notes of grapefruit pith and ocean spray. Wonderfully complex with high tension that will unravel gracefully in bottle.”

O A K S

Over the past few years we have been planting our farm up with a variety of oaks. 15 years ago Chris planted a lot of native trees but few have survived with most uprooting. We thought they were the right choice but we were at a loss to explain why they reached a certain stage and literally fell over. A friend lent me a book called The Hidden Life of Trees, what a wonderful read and there within those pages was the answer. These native trees have done very well in a forest situation but perhaps they are not suited to isolation. This is where the mighty oak comes in.

Oaks are one of the best trees to plant in open spaces. They are extremely strong and resilient, their wood is permeated with tannins discouraging insects and fungi from attacking and decomposing. Replacement branches can be grown if lightening were to strike, their shade coverage is far superior to that of a eucalypt and they are naturally fire resistant.

We trialled 8 different varieties of oak, last years drought was a test with half being in their first year, the “drought resistant” oaks died the English, French and Holm thrived…go figure. Every ecosystem is different and it takes time to find the right solution…regeneration is a life project.

One of our orchards was overrun with kikuyu grass, not ideal…the solution came in the form of nature, over the course of 6 months our chooks wiped out the kikuyu, two weeks ago Chris and Dan hand seeded a regenerative summer mix of buckwheat, millet, sunflowers, vetch, cowpea and it is powering and gave it a good dose of a fermented biological tea comprised of worm juice, seaweed and beneficial fungi 🌱

Another week on the whipper snipper for Chris and Dan, mowing down the area around the vines making it harder for weevils to access the growing canopy. Why such an arduous process? The sheep are employed to perform this role during the winter months but with new growth on the vines this is no longer an option. No machinery means less compaction in the rows, no tilling under vine ensures the fungal networks remain in tact, there is no detrimental affect on the microbial life and carbon being stored in the soil is not released. The grass cuttings remain on the ground at the base of the vine providing a layer of mulch to the vines trapping moisture for the upcoming summer season all the while feeding the life within the soil.
