Our third bull into the ring as Lot 111 at the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale is Smithy's Holden. An Oasis Triple Eight son out of a Glenlands Utopia daughter - you can't really go wrong. Our second bull into the ring as Lot 110 at the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale is Smithy's Hercules. A bull dripping with skin, tremendous bone and carcass and a real sire's head. Matched to a pedigree with all the big names - he's a bull not to miss. Scan data of P8/Rib - 12/10mm, EMA - 126sqcm, IMF - 5.5%. Motility 70%, Morphology 85% and scrotal 39cm. Another Locarno Piper son by Oasis Dundee, he comes with great muscularity, clean sheath and a faultless temperament. Scans are P8/Rib 16/13mm, EMA 137cm and IMF 5.7%. Motility 80% and Morphology 96%, 38cm Scrotal. Fully vaccinated with 7 in 1, pestigard, botulism, 3 day, vibrio, and tick fever. Pesti and pompes tested negative. Full parental verification and myostatin tested negative for all variants.

It’s official, Smithy’s Droughtmasters has a new home. Risdon Stud, Warwick. A property with a history of breeding quality tropical cattle since the 1950’s when the then owners, King Ranch imported the first Santa Gertrudis cattle into Australia, and used Risdon as their home base for their on property sale. Stud droughtmasters were then run during the 70’s and 80’s before a commercial droughtmaster operation ran until current. Our operation will now be based on the one property for our stud and commercial herds. Stay tuned for more updates.

Yesterday we received the most amazing gift of a fully trained kelpie. Our local stock agent came to assess our weaner steers 2 years ago and suggested we would benefit from a dog to help muster. Fast forward to yesterday when he arrived with our dog. Blake Doro, you are an absolute gentleman, and we really appreciate the new worker. Welcome to Smithy’s, Honey.

After a beautiful 36mm of rain last night, it’s an amazing afternoon here at Smithy’s. We’re up installing new bore header tanks in preparation for the maiden heifers to arrive in the next couple of weeks. The photo looks back over the breeder paddock and to the homestead in the distance.

We've been working hard getting some internal fencing installed on the new breeder paddock. While the distance was only a little over 4km, it was the terrain that made this job a little more difficult. 800 star posts driven in with the new Christie post driver (over 2 days), and the Thor post driver thumped in the drill rod stays - lets just say at over a meter in the ground they aren't going anywhere. Due to the steepness and camber we were working on, I knocked up a single wire unwinder to go behind the buggy. One wire at a time wasn't ideal, but we got there in the end. Just the gates left to weld on, the the heifers will be ready to move into their new paddock. Next job will be to get the yards installed.
