There are many different opinions about short leg Dexters. The condition known as short leg is caused by a single chondrodysplasia gene.
It is believed by many to produce the smallest and cutest Dexters.
This photo is of a 4 month old Dexter who is a "long leg" without the gene. Yet she is smaller than the average 2 month old, her Mum and Dad were both small Dexters but the decision to breed them was made because they had great conformation, not with the intent to specifically produce a petite calf.

I don't get close to this New Mum as she is a feisty protective mother, particularly in the first week after birth. Giving clear warning that visitors are definitely not welcome 🤗
Margie is 13 years old and this polled bull calf is her 9th calf. A good demonstration of the longevity of Dexters and their fertility as there was 2 years during the COVID lockdown when we didn't have access to a bull.
One of the reasons I believe that focus on great confirmation is so important as if their structure isn't right problems can emerge or in this case she is as fit and vital as a much younger mum. It would be expected that a great cow like her could breed until they are 20 yrs old.

An unexpected surprise this morning and a reminder to never underestimate Dexter's fertility.
Flower gave birth to a lovely little red bull calf this morning. In theory it takes 3 months after a birth before the cow is fertile however she must have got pregnant 5-6 weeks after giving birth to have had this gorgeous little man. I believed that she would be due late September at the earliest. It's always so special 🥰

Due to an unfortunate event the new owners of these 2 young heifers are no longer in a position to take them.
Therefore they are once again available. Jade (black 7 months) can be registered if required and Joy the dun girl just 4 months old who is out of our most friendly cow will be brought in for halter training in a couple of weeks.
