Alpaca cria weaning now complete.

The cria had 7 days of gradual weaning - apart from their mums during the day and reunited in the evening. On day 8, all mums and cria were health checked and weighed and then separated into different groups.

The cria are with the yearlings (cria from last year) and some older "aunties". The mums are with the remainder of the female herd.

All are very settled in their new groups and doing well.

Day 2 of gradual weaning for all cria at Lalirra Yellingbo.

Dams and cria are separated each morning, this involves a bit of juggling and lots of gate openings and closings!

The cria are in one paddock with some other yearlings for company and their mums are in the next paddock with a laneway in between. Cria spend 6-8 hours without their mums. The mums are off grazing quite happily all day.

Early evening, all reunited - it is the only time we ever witness synchronised feeding (see video)! There is lots of slurping for a few minutes and then they all wander off again to graze.

This system does involve more work and is only possible with a small group, but is certainly a more gentle way to truly wean instead of just separating.

We will continue this process for 1-2 weeks before final separation.
