COMBINING TO LEND A HAND
A small group of volunteer contractors has quietly banded together at Solitude Estate in the Yarra Valley to donate a semi-trailer load of hay to farmers impacted by the recent bushfires near Euroa, north-east of Melbourne.
“It only took a few phone calls to get the right people here to lend their expertise and time for a good cause,” said Solitude manager Greg Kerr. “It’s wonderful to see that special Australian can-do spirit shining through during tough times like this. People are stepping forward to help in what-ever way they can: it all makes a difference.”
The hay, he said, was destined for a number of farms at Creighton’s Creek, near Longwood, where the fires claimed the life of a farmer, wiped out thousands of hectares of grazing land - and hundreds of head of livestock - as well as destroying homes and buildings.
The hay was harvested by father-and-daughter team Mick and Janeka Hackel of Ag-it Agriculture, and transported by Tim O’ Dwyer and Neil Morris of Little Yarra Ag.
“You’ve got to do what you can to help,” said Tim O’Dwyer, who specialises in transporting feed to disaster zones across the country.
A big thank you to all concerned, and wishing better times ahead for those who have suffered as a result of the fires.
