The 2025 drop SWS Sire Evaluation wethers were processed on 21 April at Gundagai Meat Processors, joined by a big team of keen onlookers including the SheepMetriX team, James Burge (host producer), Davo Weir (SWS SE Committee member), Lisa Haylock (CSU Placement Student), Sarah Preston (SwabTec) & Grant Burbidge (Burbidge Farms). Thank you to all these volunteers for your time and effort! A comprehensive range of data was collected, including IMF (Intramuscular Fat), LMY (lean meat yield), carcase weight (CWT), and liveweight plus much more, providing valuable insights into sire performance.
A big thanks also to Jake Bourlet & Emily Stewart from Gundagai Lamb for all your help!

Alongside this, 150 random gut samples were taken, with abomasum lining scrapings collected to support and validate the work from SwabTec. This research is investigating worm resistance using saliva samples, and these additional measurements will help strengthen the findings.

Gordon’s Sheep & Goat Adventures & the Launch of GoatMetriX! 🐑🐐

Gordon has been clocking up the kilometers across Australia this month, one day attending the Leading Sheep Forum in QLD, and the next heading south for the Measured Goats Field Day in NSW.

With sheep and goat reproduction as his specialty, Gordon shared valuable insights on the key factors influencing fertility in both ewes and rams to a strong crowd in Longreach. He also tuned into the latest research and outcomes from the Measured Goats and Going Ahead with Goats Field Day, projects he’s been actively involved in through data collection and analysis from his days at the DPI.

Off the back of this, we’re officially crowning Gordon our resident goat expert 🐐 and are excited to launch a brand new GoatMetriX segment on our website.

Gundagai Meats Tour

Yesterday a very lucky 12 people had the opportunity to spend the day in Gundagai for a workshop focused on lamb.
We spent the morning listening to experts Sally Martin from SheepmetriX and Jock Munroe from Coolac Vet Services where we covered the value of EID, genetics, markets, animal health and feedback data available from GMP.
We then headed over the Gundagai Meat Processors for a fully guided information session and complete tour of their facilities and state of the art technology. It gave us producers much to talk about with the growing opportunities, especially now IMF is measurable in lamb and new markets are arising.
