This past year we have been investing in our pastures and our sheep genetics and I’m so excited for this coming year.
We have been time-controlled grazing for 6+ years, investing in fencing and tree lanes. No fertiliser and spot spraying weeds as required. As a result of our management we starting seeing an increase in native grasses, mostly Red Grass and Slender Rat’s Tail Grass. Great for ground-cover, drought resistance and native habitat, but the sheep weren’t too keen on eating it, and over eating the more palatable grass species.
So we had a product called AgriAsh applied at 3.5t/ha late last winter. This lifted our soil’s pH and also increased prosperous. I’m really pleased with the results! Natives grasses are still present, but the other grass species are becoming more competitive. Agriash only needs to be applied every 5 years, not annually like most other products.
As it was so dry here last Autumn, we only joined less than half of our ewes, which also took the pressure off our pastures in Spring. The ewes are in top condition, growing lots of gorgeous wool. And I’m super excited about this year’s Spring lambing.
