Happy Heavenly Birthday, Miles Davis: The Man Who Never Stopped Moving
Born: May 26, 1926 — Died: September 28, 1991
Wishing the great Miles Davis a Happy Heavenly Birthday today, born on this day in 1926 in Alton, Illinois. Miles picked up the trumpet at age nine and never looked back. By eighteen, he was playing alongside Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in New York City. He was already something special and the whole jazz world knew it.
Miles played with some of the greatest musicians who ever lived. John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock all shared his bandstand. Together, they made Kind of Blue in 1959 the best-selling jazz album of all time. He also recorded Birth of the Cool, a record that launched an entirely new sound in jazz.
Miles Davis changed music not once, but many times over. He moved through cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and electric fusion without ever repeating himself. When he passed on September 28, 1991, the world lost a true original. His music still plays on, bold, cool, and very much alive.
