Nobelhart und Schmutzig: Awarded #43 in the World’s 50 Best. Schmutzig I am told means dirty and the Uber driver laughs as he drops us off. Here are some points about dinner last night:
The green plastic curtains in the window are huge and glossy, an artwork by .It’s not 💯 clear it’s a restaurant, lol. You must ring a doorbell to enter.
On entering we are taken to a large bar-type table where we face a small selection of books they seem to want us to see, it includes ’Nose to Tail Eating’ by Fergus Henderson. Our host is very friendly and enthusiastic, she asks what we would like to drink and offers us a selection of stories that pair with the drinks, too much info and we have the champagne. It’s good.
1.
Bread, because (we are told), German’s eat bread, and butter that they make themselves, it is aged for two months in a crock, which is presented to us. The bread is brown and honestly a bit dry, the butter tastes salty, slightly sour. It is served with two cubes of homemade cow feta, a small plate with some celery, (tastes like celery); another plate with two radishes cut in half and spread with a paste of crumb and melted butter, not so nice. The blackcurrant oil on the raw pepper was good/ woody, but wasn’t enough to impress. Locally sourced, organic, sustainable—fine, but what’s the point if the products don’t taste of anything.
2.
Colourful tomatoes served with fresh coriander seeds in an onion soup. Tasteless toms, cut too large to put in mouth easily, though we are advised to eat with a spoon. Onion soup is bland too. Tastiest bits were the fresh coriander seeds. Plates and ceramics are huge and clumsy and grey and ugly.
3. Can’t be bothered anymore, my text doesn’t fit. I’m also not one to complain. It was crap and expensive, -a scam. Happy Birthday .biz 💔 that was embarrassing! Ps the pics are not from the resto, only the last one.
