Ever since, this brand has brought highland agaves down to the valley to make their tequila and the unwavering attention to their craft led to El Tequileño, by insiders long considered Mexico’s Best Kept Secret, being declared as Tequila Of The Year 2024. Next to that, El Tequileño was one of the first brands to experiment with significantly longer ageing of their tequila, creating the Reposado Rare range. Definitely worth trying during copitas!

On the 27th of September, we are bringing the spirits of Mexico to the city of Oostende. Why Oostende though?

Oostende is a coastal city with a harbour and rich maritime history, a vibrant city centre and a gorgeous wide beach along the North Sea. Along the beach, the iconic defines the skyline and will host our event. The city is easy to get to by car, sea, air and public transport and within the city, there’s a ton of mobility options to get you to Copitas. Whether it’s riding in group on a classic billekar or a hopping on a section of the longest tramline in the world!

We encourage safe driving, so if you have a designated driver amongst you, there’s also plenty of parking available in the vicinity of the hotel.

And last but not least: breathing in the salty air has health benefits according to scientific research. Get inspired by the swell, enjoy copitas with friends old and new and you can feel like you’re on a Mexican beach in a heartbeat!

Flying into the new week like these voladores de papantla in the town of tequila. Just like Mexican cuisine, the ritual ceremony of the voladores de papantla are considered intangible cultural heritage by since 2009. If you are in the town of Tequila, you can see them do their dance in front of the church while enjoying a tequila cocktail from one of the many street vendors, but there are many other locations throughout Mexico where you can gasp in awe as these dancers fling themselves off a giant pole. We can’t promise you the danza volador at Copitas, but definitely a lot of Mexican spirits to be discovered.

Did you know that Mexico has a longstanding sugarcane history? Its early rum industry fell in disarray because of spanish prohibition, but early in the 20th century, some producers started to make rum again. Mexico’s sugarcane production was so large that Bacardi’s first distillery outside of Cuba was in Mexico so that demand for the brand could be met. Copitas is a project that we’ve been working on for a while. And things sometimes take time. Like agaves who have been working silently for years before they grow a quiote, the asparagus-looking stalk in the center on which they grow their flowers and from which seeds are dispersed. Blue skies over the Chihuahan Desert and a landscape dotted by green sotol plants. Sotol is a plant that’s often lumped into the agave category because a distilled drink is made from it in a very similar way to mezcal. The leaves are shaved off to reveal it’s heart, which is then roasted or steamed, shredded, fermented and distilled. It’s a different species of plant, but does make for a tasty tipple. During Copitas, you’ll be able to discover several expressions of Sotol and learn about these bottled stories from Mexico. Ticketlink in bio!

Looking at this picture, you understand instantly why this varietal is called the blue agave. There are a lot of varietals and most are endemic to Mexico. Some, like this blue weber, only need approximately 7 years to mature; others need 25-30 years. Good thing you don’t have to wait that long until copitas!
