Wijndomein Hoenshof ligt in Haspengouw, midden in de fruitstreek. Geen wonder, dit fraaie glooiende landschap heeft de wijnbouw in zijn genen. Druiven floreren getuigd de rijke wijntraditie die in Haspengouw heerst. Historie, cultuur en smaak van dichtbij huis. Daar kunnen we veel over vertellen of u proeft het zelf. Inmiddels telt het domein al een 6.5 hectare aan wijngaarden. Het is de geboortegrond van fraaie Haspengouwse wijn, door Wijndomein Hoenshof gebotteld in vele smakelijke varianten.

🍇 How do we know what’s happening inside our grapes?

As harvest approaches, we regularly sample grapes from different parts of the vineyard to follow their ripening.

We crush and press a few clusters, then use a refractometer to estimate the sugar concentration in the juice.

🔬 Today’s reading: 15 °Oe — still very low for w**e. The green seeds and fresh, tart taste also tell us these grapes have plenty of ripening ahead.

Too early for w**e, but just right for a little verjus!

🍇 The countdown to harvest is on... and one of the most exciting stages has just begun!

We’re now in the middle of véraison—the stage where grapes begin to change color and ripening truly begins. On some grape clusters, you can even see green and purple berries growing side by side.

🍷 During this stage:

• Sugar levels increase.

• Acidity gradually decreases.

• The berries become softer.

• Red grapes develop their characteristic purple color.

🍇 Vineyard Update – Part 8

☀️ Too much sunshine isn’t always a good thing.
The recent heatwave brought temperatures of 36°C to our vineyard. While sunshine helps grapes ripen, extreme heat can cause sunburn on grape clusters exposed to direct sunlight.

🍇 The grapes growing in the shade were just fine, while those exposed to direct sunlight developed sunburn.

🍇 Vineyard Update – Part 7

At the beginning of June, flowering took place under difficult conditions. (Check out Part 2 of our Vineyard Updates!)

🌧️ The wet weather resulted in less successful flowering, which means some of our grape bunches are more open and have fewer berries than usual.

🍇 But there’s a positive side to those loose bunches. More space between the grapes allows for better air circulation and helps them dry faster in humid conditions.

🌿 Better airflow also reduces the risk of bunch rot and fungal diseases, while less contact between the berries means they’re less likely to split or become damaged.

So, while there may be slightly fewer grapes this year, these looser bunches can help keep the grapes healthy as they continue to ripen.

🍇 Vineyard Update – Part 6

For the past few weeks, our focus has been on growing a healthy canopy. Every leaf plays a role in producing the energy the vine needs to ripen its grapes.

☀️ Leaves act like the vine’s solar panels, capturing sunlight and converting it into the sugars that fuel grape development.

🍇 Now that each grape cluster has enough supporting leaves, the vine has reached an important milestone.

✂️ Our next step is shoot tipping - removing the growing tip from each shoot. This encourages the vine to stop investing energy in new shoot growth and instead direct more of its resources toward ripening the grapes.

🍇Vineyard Update - Part 5

Last time, we showed how important light and airflow are for healthy grape development. As the vines continue to grow, new side shoots have started to appear.

🌿 These extra shoots, also called “suckers,” grow from the main branches and can quickly make the canopy too dense.

💨 Too much growth reduces airflow and blocks sunlight from reaching the future grape clusters, creating less ideal conditions in the vineyard.

✂️ That’s why we remove these unwanted shoots now, helping the vines stay balanced and healthy.

🍇 By improving light exposure and air circulation, we create better conditions for strong grape development in the weeks ahead.

🍇 Vineyard Update - Part 4

At this stage of the season, every task in the vineyard matters.

The work we do now helps keep the shoots upright and properly positioned, creating a well-balanced canopy as the grapes continue to develop.

Good canopy management improves air circulation and ensures the grape clusters receive enough sunlight, creating the right conditions for even ripening in the weeks ahead.

Last week’s hailstorm left some visible damage, but our vines are already pushing out new growth. 🌱
