On 7 October 2026, EFG President David Govoni participated in a press conference at Piacenza Expo, Italy, to present MINING 2027, a new European exhibition and conference dedicated to mining and quarrying, scheduled for 13–14 October 2027.

During the presentation, David Govoni highlighted the importance of initiatives such as MINING 2027 in strengthening Europe's mining industry and promoting collaboration among professionals, industry stakeholders and institutions.

He emphasised the essential role of professional and certified geologists, particularly European Geologist title holders ( - https://eurogeologists.eu/eurgeol-title/), in the mining sector. Their expertise contributes to technical assessments, resource verification and building public trust, all of which are vital to the responsible development of Europe's mineral resources.

MINING 2027 aims to provide a platform for showcasing innovation, exchanging knowledge and encouraging informed discussions about the future of mining in Europe. We welcome the combination of exhibition and conference formats, recognising the importance of knowledge sharing and professional expertise in supporting the sector's development.

EFG supports this initiative alongside several key sectoral Italian organisations: National Association of Quarry Producers and Related Industries (ANEPLA), National Association of Hydrogeology, Water Wells and Geothermal Energy (ANIPA), National Council of Geologists (CNG), and the Association of Mining Engineers (ANIM).

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) deeply mourns the sudden passing of Filippo Cappotto, Vice-President of the Italian National Council of Geologists (Consiglio Nazionale dei Geologi, CNG) and President of Fondazione Centro Studi del CNG.

Filippo was a dedicated professional and a passionate advocate for environmental protection, risk mitigation and civil protection. Through his commitment, expertise and service in representing the Italian geological profession, he made a valuable contribution to the professional community and to our shared aspirations for the future of the profession. His expertise, integrity, and warm heart will be profoundly missed by the geological community.

The EFG extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the entire Italian geological community. Our thoughts are with all those mourning his loss during this time of sorrow.

EFG President David Govoni participated in Geofluid 2026, held from 7 to 10 October in Piacenza, Italy, contributing to discussions on geothermal energy and critical raw materials.

The event brought together international experts, industry representatives and geoscience professionals to exchange knowledge on subsurface technologies, resource management and the role of geology in addressing Europe's strategic priorities.

On 7 October, at the conference "The Hot Heart of the Transition: Geothermal Energy and Storage, Where Geology Becomes Energy", David Govoni emphasised the need to move beyond the exploitation of individual geothermal resources towards integrated subsurface management. He highlighted that Europe's main challenge lies not in its geological potential, but in making that potential accessible through faster and more predictable permitting, reduced exploration risks and improved geological data. He also underlined the role of geologists in translating subsurface knowledge into investment confidence and public trust.

On 9 October, during the conference "Critical Raw Materials: Geopolitics of Resources, Supply Chain Risks and the Search for Mining Autonomy", he stressed that securing mineral deposits alone is insufficient to build resilient supply chains. He called for stronger integration across extraction, processing and manufacturing, alongside a comprehensive raw materials strategy, streamlined permitting and greater involvement of certified geological professionals such as European Geologist title holders ( ). He also highlighted the importance of public engagement and social acceptance in enabling responsible mining projects.

David’s participation reinforced the essential role of geological expertise in advancing Europe's energy transition, strengthening raw materials security and supporting the sustainable management of subsurface resources.

Thanks to Geofluid for the invitation and partnership around the event!

🌊 The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) at the GENESIS Clustering Workshop "Water Nature-Based Solutions for Islands’ Resilience"!

EFG is pleased to participate as a project partner in the GENESIS project and to contribute to the GENESIS Clustering Workshop, taking place on 7-8 October 2026 in Horta, Faial, Azores.

The workshop has brought together researchers, water managers, public authorities, practitioners, and European projects to explore how nature-based solutions (NbSs) can help island territories address water scarcity, saltwater intrusion, extreme weather events, and the growing impacts of climate change.

EFG was represented at the workshop by Projects Advisor Pavlos Tyrologou and by Head of Projects Unit Vitor Correia.

As a GENESIS project partner, EFG leads Work Package 3 - Demonstrators and Replications Implementation, which focuses on developing, testing, and advancing the adoption of NbSs that safeguard critical water infrastructure in highly vulnerable oceanic islands of the Macaronesia region.

The workshop is an important opportunity for EFG and the GENESIS partners to exchange knowledge, showcase experiences, and strengthen collaboration on practical solutions for water security and climate resilience in islands and beyond.

The workshop has also received media attention, and we are pleased to share some of the coverage below:
