Rojac is a family-owned winery located in the village of Gažon, in the Slovenian part of Istria. With a history in viticulture and olive cultivation that dates back to the 17th century, the Rojac family has a deep connection to the land and a philosophy of winemaking that emphasizes minimal intervention and a focus on expressing the unique terroir of their region.
The core belief at Rojac is that "wine is created in the vineyards." This means that meticulous work is done on the vines to ensure the highest quality grapes are harvested. The vineyards are cultivated using organic and biodynamic principles, with a low-yield approach to maximize the quality and concentration of the grapes. The unique micro-climate of the region—characterized by warm, sunny days tempered by cool breezes from the Adriatic Sea—and the mineral-rich Eocene flysch soil contribute significantly to the character of the wines.
In the cellar, the process is one of minimal interference. The musts are allowed to ferment with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are often unfiltered and aged in a way that allows them to fully develop their natural character. This approach results in wines that are authentic, structured, and a true reflection of the land.
Rojac is particularly known for its focus on two indigenous grape varieties: Refošk (Refosco) and Malvazija (Malvasia).
Refošk: This red grape is a cornerstone of Istrian viticulture. Rojac's Refošk wines are known for their deep color and rich, complex character. Tasting notes often include dark fruit flavors like blackberry and currant, along with earthy, savory, and even metallic or spicy notes.
Malvazija: The Malvazija from Rojac is a white wine that can be made in both a fresh style and a macerated (orange) wine style. The macerated Malvazija, in particular, is an example of Rojac's commitment to traditional methods, as the process of extended skin contact was historically used in Istria to protect the wine in the absence of temperature-controlled cellars.
Beyond these two main varieties, the winery also produces other wines, including a sparkling rosé and blends. A notable historical wine is "Renero," a red wine from the region that was so highly regarded centuries ago in the Republic of Venice that it was taxed at a much higher rate. Rojac's Renero is a tribute to this heritage.
Rojac wines are often described as unconventional and authentic. They are a blend of ancestral practices and a modern, quality-focused approach. The family's dedication to honest winemaking and their deep respect for their land and heritage have positioned them as a notable producer of natural wines in the Slovenian Istria region.
