Two Rock Wine Company There has never been a better time to be a wine lover. Prior to that he was a barrister and attorney practicing in Bermuda.

Not only has the range of available wines improved dramatically but producers are focussing more on creating elegant, balanced wines, made for drinking rather than effect. Our job, or more properly our passion, is to source and sell wines that are a pleasure to drink and which tell a story. We often visit wineries directly, trying better to understand how the wines are made and where they come from. Our portfolio is made up of mainly small, family producers, many of whom practice organic and biodynamic viticulture. Who We Are:

John Sharpe founded and managed New World Wines, an importer and distributor of fine wine based in Bermuda, from 1997 – 2013. Mat Macdonald has studied Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University in Christchurch, New Zealand and has worked at both Neudorf in Nelson and Larkmead in Napa Valley.

Our wine of the week comes from Torroja del Priorat, a village held up by terraces of llicorella, the broken black slate that defines this corner of Catalonia. Dominik Huber arrived from Germany over twenty years ago with no land here, and built Terroir al Limit () parcel by parcel into one of Priorat's most closely watched cellars.

Terra de Cuques Negre is his village wine: half Carignan on pure slate, half Garnatxa on clay and slate, organically farmed vines twenty-five to forty years old, whole bunches, wild yeast, bottled early for freshness. Red cherry, blood orange peel, dried herbs, warm slate. Serve it just cool.

Step inside the legacy of Pereira d’Oliveira, one of the great classic Madeira houses, in this week's Journal.

Founded in 1850 and rooted in a lineage dating back to 1820 — with cellars in Funchal that go all the way back to 1619 — D’Oliveira holds one of the richest stocks of old Madeira in existence. Over generations, their collection has expanded through historic marriages and acquisitions of other legendary producers.

Wine of the week: Château Grand Ormeau () Cuvée Chevalier 2019, Lalande de Pomerol. Seven years on, this one is right where you want it: dark plum, black cherry, violet, a ferrous mineral edge, velvety tannins.

The estate sits just across the Barbanne from Pomerol, on the same iron-rich soils, and was already listed among the appellation's best in the 1874 Féret guide. Cuvée Chevalier is the second wine, 80 percent Merlot from three hectares of younger vines, raised mostly in vat to keep the fruit forward.

This Saturday, we're pouring both banks of the Barbanne on one table. The stream is small enough to step across, but on one side sits Pomerol, and on the other, Lalande-de-Pomerol: same clay, same Merlot, same warm 2019 sun.

Our wine of the week, Château Grand Ormeau () Cuvée Chevalier 2019, comes from the Lalande side: Merlot-led and generous, dark plum and mocha, supple tannins, $26. Across the stream, Château Latour à Pomerol 2019, farmed by the Moueix family alongside Petrus and Trotanoy, is old-vine Merlot on the plateau: black cherry, truffle, plush tannins built for a decade, $100.

Our wine of the week sits just across the Barbanne from Pomerol, where the ground barely changes: gravel over clay streaked with iron. Château Grand Ormeau () has stood here for over two centuries and was already listed among the appellation's best in the 1874 Féret guide.

Cuvée Chevalier is the estate's second wine, from three hectares of younger vines: 80 percent Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, raised mostly in vat so the fruit leads. Seven years on, the 2019 is right in its window: dark plum, black cherry, violet, a ferrous edge, tannins folded in beautifully.

Wine of the week: Jacky Marteau (), La Chipie, Touraine-Chenonceaux Blanc 2023. Ludivine Marteau runs this family domaine on the slopes above Pouillé, land the Marteaus have farmed for four generations, and La Chipie is her signature cuvée: chipie is French for a little troublemaker, and the name suits the style.

She works thirty-year-old vines on clay and flint, giving part of the blend six hours on the skins before nine months on the lees in tank, with no oak at all. It's grapefruit, white peach, and acacia, with a flinty finish and real texture underneath.
