🇧🇸💙🌱 When we asked Bahamians which local businesses deserve more support, one name stood out among the recommendations - Chavara Roker, founder of Chiccharney Farms.
Her story is about much more than an agricultural business. After more than a decade working in casino regulation and enforcement, Chavara made a bold career change, choosing to follow her passion for agriculture and contribute to the development of her home island of Andros.
In 2013, she founded Chiccharney Farms with a simple but powerful idea — to connect local farmers directly with customers and create greater opportunities for Bahamian producers. What began as a small initiative has grown into a recognised local brand connecting farmers, restaurants and communities with fresh, Bahamian-grown produce.
The business produces and sells fresh, locally grown and organic fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, while also offering a range of locally prepared products, including breads, sauces, jams, teas, fermented products and other natural goods.
Chiccharney Farms also operates as a farm-to-table business, connecting agriculture with food and tourism. Its offerings include special outdoor dining experiences known as “Chasing Butterflies,” where guests can enjoy meals prepared with seasonal, locally available produce from the farm and the sea.
Chavara believes local production can create jobs, strengthen communities and give Bahamians greater opportunities to grow and produce their own food.
Today, she represents entrepreneurship with a purpose a Bahamian woman who has turned the land of Andros into a business, while also building a story of local success, community and a more sustainable future for The Bahamas.
