Why Soup Joumou Is Celebrated
In Haitiโs early years, enslaved people were barred from foods enjoyed by masters, including beef and rich pumpkin dishesโSoup Joumou in particular. Enslaved cooks were required to prepare the soup but could not partake in it.
On January 1, 1804, Haiti declared independence, and leaders honored the struggle with a symbolic feast in which the formerly enslaved could finally participate in the celebration and the dish itself.
Today, Haitians prepare and share Soup Joumou to celebrate freedom and national identity, a reminder that a once-forbidden food now represents independence and pride.
