Kalahari Farm
Kalahari Farm is a 16 hectare small holdings located 8km outside the town of Ghanzi in western Botswana. The farm is typical central Kalahari dry thornveld. Our vision is to develop the farm along permaculture principles, ideal in this harsh desert environment with poor sandy soils and open thornveld woodland. As of December 2018 our project is in its early stages. We have ring fenced the land with eleven strands of strong quality fencing and drilled a borehole delivering 10,000 litres an hour of excellent quality water. We are in the process of erecting water tanks and have installed a Grundfos borehole pump with solar panels. We are artisinal farmers dedicated to African rare breeds will be moving our herd of rare African Kolbroek heritage pigs to the farm soon along with our flock of rare African Venda chickens. In time we will be adding Nigerian Dwarf goats and we will run a herd of Boer goats for cash turnover and because they are ideal in this environment. Lastly we will add Pekin ducks just because they taste so damn good!
Along with our livestock we are developing a charcuterie to learn the ancient fine skills of meat preservation. We already have a small farm butchery on the game farm we currently manage and produce a wide range of meat products for guests including local game boerewors (farmers sausage). marinaded game steak, traditional Cape Malay sosaties, hot smoked game fillet, smoked Kolbroek Kassler chops, smoked Kolbroek bacon and we are always trying our hand at new sausages like Merguez goat sausage and sweet Italian. We are building a cold smoker and charcuterie cabinet which is a big challenge in 40C plus heat and 10% humidity!
Finally we live among the Kalahari San (Bushmen) who have taught us a great deal about the wild foods and medicinal plants in the Kalahari. For five years we have been buying and exporting Devil’s Claw, a natural remedy for arthritus, and we produce coffee from Shepherds tree roots and roast Morama beans harvested from the veld. We also process the rare Kalahari truffle when it is available and we would like to cold process Ximenia oils along with Morama oil. Other projects in the future include setting up an essential oil distillery for the various aromatic herbs we find in the desert.
We are not young anymore and are deeply passionate for the Kalahari, the amazing country that is Botswana, all her people especially the San, and the incredible good fortune we have to be pursuing such a dream through our old age.
