Columbia River Source Farm

Columbia River Source Farm Provides value-added products from cacao, coffee, and spices and eco-tourism services. This way of life was practiced for many generations.

The Columbia River Source Farm is owned and operated by a Q’eqchi’ Maya family in southern Belize and is located 2.5 miles up the Columbia River. In the past, the traditional agriculture consisted of an integrated polyculture farming, sustainable organic gardens and forest foods. Ignacio settled down on a 20-acres property about 60 years ago. With the help of his forefathers’ wisdom, he started fa

rming but adapted climate smart agriculture practices that are today known as permaculture and agroforestry systems. The Mayas believed that we are stewards of the land and need to protect and nurture it so it can continue to provide for us now and for future generations. Hence, he preserved that deep connection between people and nature. This 20 acres of property has cacao, coffee, numerous species of hardwoods, many local fruit trees, ornamental plants and about 20% is uncultivated. Ignacio and his family still follow their Maya traditions, including preparing authentic Maya dishes, using herbal remedies, practicing some beliefs and customs, farming majority of their own food, and using water from the Columbia River. The family is now inviting you to come and discover more about their sustainable way of farming, immerse yourself in the Q’eqchi’ Maya culture, and establish a connection with nature. During your trip, you’ll have the chance to have hands-on experience with traditional chocolate or coffee roasting process cooking and savoring the authentic dishes and learn about their sustainable agricultural practices for environmental conservation. To get to the farm you can either take a thrilling jungle hike then can enjoy a refreshing swim in the Columbia River or take an adventurous dorey ride. Your trip here will undoubtedly be an unforgettable experience.

The daily 30-minute walk from the village to the farm is especially beautiful during the dry season. 🌿
About halfway along the journey, the path is filled with the sounds of nature and shaded by tall trees that offer a welcome break from the sun.

It’s not always an easy hike, but it’s part of our daily routine, traveling to Punta Gorda to sell our produce and making sure the kids get to school.

Life on the farm comes with its challenges, but moments like these remind us how closely connected we are to the land and the journey we take every day. 💚🌱

Shade-Grown Cacao🌳

At Columbia River Source Farm, our cacao is shade-grown beneath hardwoods trees (mahogany, cedar), cohune palms, native Inga species (Bri-Bri), Theobroma bicolor, and more.

Shade-grown cacao means richer flavor, healthier soil, and diversity of wildlife. 🌳

We grow in harmony with nature, and every chocolate made on the farm comes from our single-origin cacao beans.

Harvesting fresh bananas🍌from the tree

It is always a delight to have fresh bananas especially organically grown ones.

Although it is green we cut them down before it ripens so we can get them before the birds. If left unattended birds will have a feast!

Did you know? 🤔
Cacao vs. cocoa= roasting intensity produces difference in flavor and nutrition

Cacao is roasted with minimal temperature, keeping more nutrients and natural flavor.
Cocoa is roasted at high heat and often mixed with sugar or additives.

We proudly offer pure, farm-grown cacao, the healthiest chocolate choice. 🌱
