Been working on our jungle trail. It’s so beautiful down there and we have lots of plans for a riot of flowers and butterfly/hummingbird attractors. This is just the beginning!

It got hot! We worked this morning until about 11:30 and decided to take the rest of the day off. Thought a trip to the mountains would cool it off, but nope! We’ll start again tomorrow…..

We had our first experience with medical care here in Belize today. We are applying for permanent residency and one of the requirements for immigration is a medical examination (yes, they have strict immigration laws here). The local clinic is very professional, incredibly clean, modern, and the staff is great. We had to have a doctor’s consultation and bloodwork. The whole process took about an hour and the final cost for everything was US$87.50 each. We’ll have our bloodwork results this afternoon.
This is what medical care costs when there’s no insurance company in the middle…..

Had a visit from the cutest little fellow today. He’s a Mexican Porcupine (or squeezle for us Anthony Bourdain fans). He was up in our Custard Apple tree having a snack. Thankfully the dog didn’t notice him.
The first time we came to Belize in 2011 we stay in a cabana at the beach. There was a cute little stray dog named Lady who got in a tangle with one of these guys and got a nose full of quills. A Canadian guy from the cabana next door and I spent the evening sitting on beach chairs, drinking beers, smoking Cuban ci**rs, and carefully pulling quills from poor Lady’s muzzle. It was my birthday. Can’t say I have ever had a birthday as strange!
The next picture is a BIG scorpion I stepped on in the kitchen. I have been lucky so far and not been stung by one and this morning was another day of luck. I felt him grab my foot with his pinchers and, with my 57 year old cat-like reflexes, I flicked my foot, he flew a few feet and, by crazy coincidence, landed on a glue trap we specifically had out to catch scorpions. Hope my luck holds out!

Just a few pictures from the last week. The new house is coming along nicely and we finally got our first pineapple on our plants. A little beach time. Some cool Chinese trucks. Beautiful sunset in the mountains. Wool from a Ceiba tree and a dog who loves keeping watch on the neighbors cows.

Our little house is flying high today! I gotta say, you couldn’t pay me enough to get under there. These guys are brave!

Had a great morning at one of our favorite places in Belize, Oxmul Coffee farm. James and his family have a beautiful organic coffee farm in the Mayan village of San Antonio, Cayo. The coffee is excellent, the stories are inspiring, and the family could not be nicer.
Have you ever had roasted corn coffee?? Neither had we. Wow! Really interesting stuff and such a great flavor without the caffeine. We bought a bag and are going to grind it and try it with honey, maybe some cacao, and whatever else we can imagine.
James told us that prior to the introduction of instant coffee, when he was a kid, they only drank roasted corn. Now he and his family have about 1300 coffee trees producing and more coming online every year.
It was a great time with our Canadian friends in the Mayan mountains!

Lots of monkey business today. This big boy is on a mission. We very rarely see them on the ground so it took the dog by surprise when he walked right by the house heading across the lawn. The dog came in the house and I went out to say hello! 🐒

He’s brave! They love the little berries on this tree so he’s coming right down to the porch.

Wake up and smell the coffee! Yesterday we got the first of our coffee plants in the ground. We have a ways to go before we start roasting but you gotta start somewhere! Next we’ll start planting Cacao. I predict some delicious Cacao/coffee concoctions in the future!
