Ever wonder what feeds the soil your food grows in?

On Peter Wiebe’s organic farm in Alberta, it’s about working with nature to grow ingredients the way they were intended. Peter uses worm castings and alfalfa to naturally enhance soil health, both of which are approved under certified organic standards.

Worm castings, often called “nature’s recycling system,” are incredibly nutrient-rich and help improve soil structure, water retention, and long-term fertility without synthetic inputs.

Here’s something fascinating: as earthworms move through soil-they aerate it and transform organic matter into nutrient-dense castings that hold high levels of plant-available nutrients 🌱

This is the kind of innovation we’re proud to source from farmers who work with nature, not against it, to grow better food from the ground up.

🌾 Food Safety Starts Long Before Food Reaches Your Kitchen

When we think about food safety, we often focus on how food is stored, prepared, and cooked at home. But food safety actually begins much earlier, at the source 🌱

One important part of a safe food system is traceability. Food traceability means there is a documented record of where an ingredient was seeded, grown, harvested, processed, and transported before it reaches consumers.

Why does this matter?

✅ It helps identify the source of contamination more quickly.
✅ It improves transparency throughout the food supply chain.
✅ It helps strengthen accountability among producers and suppliers.

It's important to note that non-traceable foods are not automatically unsafe. However, limited visibility into sourcing can make it harder to respond effectively when food safety concerns arise.

As consumers, we can support a safer food system by:

✔️ Reading labels carefully
✔️ Asking questions about food sourcing when possible
✔️ Supporting brands and producers that prioritize transparency

Food safety isn't just about what ends up on your plate. It's also about understanding where your food came from and the journey it took to get there.

Come behind the scenes with us as we visit one of our organic oat farmers during seeding season. 🌱

This spring, we traveled to Manning, Alberta, to visit our organic oat farmer, Brad Rabiey, during one of the most important times of the year: seeding season.

Timing, soil conditions, weather, and careful planning all play a role in setting the crop up for success. For organic farmers like Brad, that success starts long before the seeds go into the ground. It requires healthy soil, thoughtful crop rotations, and a commitment to growing food in harmony with nature.

From sunrise to sunset, Brad and his dad work tirelessly preparing fields, monitoring conditions, and planting the oats that will eventually become part of the foods we enjoy. Seeing the process firsthand gave us a deeper appreciation for the knowledge, dedication, and care that go into every harvest 🌾🧡

At One Degree Organics, every ingredient has a story. That's why we are committed to knowing exactly where our ingredients come from and the people who grow them. Visiting Brad's farm reminded us that behind every bag of oats is a farming family and months of hard work that often go unseen.

We're excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at what we learned during our visit and the important role seeding season plays in building a healthier, more sustainable food system.

Want to see where it all begins? 🚜🌱

What if you could trace your flour all the way back to the seed it came from? 🌾

At One Degree, we believe transparency matters because knowing where your food comes from changes the way you experience it. Every bag of our sprouted oat flour begins with carefully selected, non-GMO seeds grown by farmers we know and trust 🌱

But what exactly makes sprouted oat flour different?

Sprouting is a natural process that begins when the whole oat grain is soaked and allowed to germinate, just as it would in nature. This gentle step helps unlock nutrients stored inside the grain, while also enhancing flavor and creating a smoother, more wholesome texture. Many people also appreciate sprouted grains for their digestibility and rich, earthy taste.

Once the oats are perfectly sprouted, they’re carefully dried and slowly milled into flour, with nothing artificial added and nothing important stripped away. Just simple, real ingredients handled with care from start to finish.

And because we believe food should never be a mystery, every bag can be traced back to its source. From the seed, to the farmer, to the final flour in your kitchen, you can follow the journey every step of the way.

That connection to real farms, real people, and real ingredients is what makes every recipe feel a little more meaningful and every bite taste a little better.

Food for thought that started with a simple question 🌱

“If we don’t spray the food we eat, why spray the rest?”

Brad Rabiey, our oat farmer grew up on a conventional farm where chemicals were part of the system, except for one place- the family garden. That contrast stayed with him to this day.

After seeing the long-term impact on the land, the crops, and the people working it, Brad chose a different path 🍃

Transitioning to organic wasn’t easy. There was more risk, more cost and work. Through a lot of research and a bit of trial and error, Brad seen what’s possible when you work with nature instead of against it.

✅Better soil
✅Stronger crops
✅A more resilient farm
✅Better tasting food

There’s always a give and take in organic farming and farmers like Brad Rabiey are proof that sustainable, organic farming is worth it. This is exactly the kind of story we believe should be behind your food 🌾🧡

Farming isn’t just science- it’s an art 🌾🧡

Every season, Brad balances patience, skill, knowledge, experience, and a deep respect for the land to grow a healthy crop. Organic farming doesn’t come with guarantees; it’s a labor of love, where every decision matters.

The grains grown on the Rabiey farm are the cleanest, most nourishing oats brought straight to your table. It’s food you can trust, grown by real people with a story we are delighted to share with you.

What does gluten-free actually mean when it comes to oats? 🌾

It’s a question we think about constantly, because while oats are naturally gluten-free, their journey from field to table is anything but simple. Along the way, they can come into contact with gluten through neighbouring fields, harvesting equipment, transportation systems, and processing facilities that also handle wheat.

Even small amounts of cross-contact can be significant, especially for individuals who rely on gluten-free foods for their health. That’s why we don’t rely on assumptions or labels alone…Instead, we take a scientific, evidence-based approach to ensure purity.

Every batch of oats goes through rigorous third-party testing using validated methods designed to detect even trace levels of gluten. By testing at multiple stages, we’re able to verify that what ends up in your bowl meets strict gluten-free standards, not just in theory, but in measurable reality.

For us, this process is about more than quality control. It’s about trust, transparency, and giving you confidence in what you’re eating every single day.

If you’ve ever wondered what goes into making oats truly gluten-free, we’re sharing a closer look at our testing process and why it matters 👇

Straight from the prairies to your table 🌾

During our visit to Manning, Alberta on Brad Rabiey’s family farm, Alonna was invited to climb into the combine-something most people outside of farming rarely experience.

A combine is the machine that harvests crops like oats by cutting, threshing, and cleaning the grain all in one pass 🚜🌾 Seeing it up close gives you a whole new appreciation for the precision and care that goes into every harvest-especially in organic farming, where farmers rely on timing, soil health, and thoughtful practices instead of synthetic shortcuts.

Moments like this remind us why we do what we do. Getting this close to the land and the people who grow our food deepens our commitment to transparency and clean ingredients. It’s how we make sure that what ends up on your table is something you can truly trust-from the very first bite.

We’re incredibly grateful to witness these processes firsthand and to share these moments with you🧡

Harvest season is where everything comes together 🌾✨

In this video, Alonna joins Brad Rabiey out in the field during one of the most important, and most demanding times of the year: harvest season.

For organic farmers like Brad, harvest is not a single moment. It’s the culmination of months of careful planning and hands-on work that starts long before any equipment enters the field. It begins with soil health; building and maintaining fertile ground through thoughtful crop rotations, organic-approved inputs, and practices that support long-term ecosystem balance. Every decision throughout the growing season directly shapes what is being harvested now.

Unlike conventional systems that can rely on quick fixes, organic farming is built on prevention, patience, and precision. That means harvest is the result of a season-long commitment to working with nature, not around it. Farmers are constantly observing conditions, adapting to weather patterns, and making real-time decisions that protect both crop quality and soil integrity.

During harvest itself, timing is critical. Fields must be ready at just the right moment, equipment must be carefully managed, and conditions have to align to ensure crops are gathered at peak quality. It’s a period of long days, early mornings, and continuous focus, because what’s being brought in represents an entire season of responsibility and care.

What makes this time of year especially meaningful is seeing it all in action: the connection between land, farmer, and food. Every pass through the field reflects not just hard work, but stewardship-an ongoing commitment to leaving the soil better than it was found.

Grateful to spend time in the field with Brad during this busy season and to share a closer look at what organic harvest truly involves. Learn more about Brad Rabiey and our organic oats: https://onedegreeorganics.com/farmers/brad-rebecca-rabiey/

Brad Rabiey is an organic oat farmer based in Alberta, Canada, where he’s dedicated his work to producing grain with integrity from the ground up 🌾

On his farm, oats aren’t just a crop-they’re part of a larger ecosystem. Every season begins with careful soil management, where building and maintaining soil health is the priority. Through regenerative practices like crop rotation and returning organic matter back to the land after harvest, Brad helps preserve natural nutrients and support long-term soil fertility.

Once harvest arrives, his focus shifts to quality and preservation. Each batch of oats is carefully tested for moisture right at the source, ensuring the grain maintains peak freshness and is handled at its best before leaving the farm. Nothing is rushed-every step is intentional, designed to protect both the crop and the land it comes from.

It’s a thoughtful, hands-on approach to farming that prioritizes sustainability, quality, and respect for the land, season after season. Watch the full video of our visit to watch Brad Rabiey and his dad harvest our organic oats: https://ow.ly/26ym50YQRzX
