Forty One years ago in 1978 we moved from Surrey to Abbotsford, British Columbia. The only criteria for the move was that the property have a view of Mount Baker. That it did, along with 700 apple trees. My parents had absol

utely no experience for this lifestyle they were about to take on. And so began the Beekeeping journey out of necessity to pollinate the trees in the apple orchard. In those days with 700 trees there were only 10 hives. Fast forward thirty years later our now expert Beekeeper is looking after and maintaining about 34 hives. The majority of the apple trees were removed twenty years ago. There are a few rows of apple and pear trees remaining for old times sake. Despite a much much lower tree count, Dad’s love for his bees continues along with the growing hive count. With way more supply than demand he takes care of and protects his bees in these uncertain times. Despite reports of bees dying, he has only lost a few bees if the winter is real hard. His bees are pampered and there is attention to every detail, everyday. It’s an art, it’s a hobby but most of all it’s a commitment. There are no sprays or chemicals of any kind used on the 10 acre property where they freely pollinate wildflowers. The picture above is from over 10 years ago. His grandson seeing the opportunity for a summer job, was selling the honey (on commission) at a local market.
