Excitement was in the air at the Salers Association of Canada's Annual General Meeting in Grande Prairie last weekend! First, the AGM brought together breeders from across the country for tours, fellowship, and discussions about the growth of the breed in Canada. Second, in just over a year, the 2027 World Salers Show & International Salers Federation (ISF) Convention will land here in Alberta at Farmfair International. What a win!

The Salers Association of Canada works hard to showcase the strength of the Salers breed through strong cattle, dedicated breeders, and a growing next generation of exhibitors. At Farmfair International in 2025, the Salers show boasted the youngest Peewee exhibitor—Emersyn Yakemchuk entered the ring just days after turning two—a huge testament to the family-focused nature of the Salers industry and to the quiet, workable temperaments Salers breeders prioritize in their cattle programs.

The Salers Association supports youth-focused programming throughout the year, including the annual Salers scholarship—awarded to Jorja McNeil in 2025. We thank E Over I Salers for their semen lot donation in the Salers Elite Sale, with proceeds supporting Salers youth initiatives.

Canadian Salers breeders are expanding their reach beyond our borders, achieving success at major national events in both Canada and the United States, including the American National Salers Show in Oklahoma City. Continental growth almost always costs you at calving, and this breed is the exception.

Most Continental breeds buy their growth with harder calvings. Salers is one of the exceptions in the research.

In U.S. Meat Animal Research Center data, calf survival to weaning tended to be higher in the breeds that needed less assistance at birth. The breeds named in that group were Hereford-Angus, Shorthorn and Salers. That is two British-type entries and one Continental.

But Salers does not sit in the British column on growth. In the MARC characterizations, calves sired by Salers, Gelbvieh, Maine-Anjou and Simmental were moderate to high in growth rate and mature size, high in lean to fat ratio, moderate in age at puberty, and moderate to high in milk production.

Salers also ranked among the top breeds for total retail product, behind Charolais, Piedmontese, Chianina and Holstein.

Growth, yield, milk, and a calf that gets up on its own. That is a rare combination, and it is why Salers turns up in rotational programs where heifers get kept back.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Haylea Thorogood for everything she has done for our Salers breed and office over the last year. Your hard work, dedication, and passion have been greatly appreciated!

We are excited to congratulate Haylea and her family on their addition arriving this fall.
