Family farming isn’t just about raising animals or growing food.

It’s about sharing experiences, passing down knowledge, learning lessons that can’t be found in a classroom, and creating a life connected to the land and each other.

Every fence built, every animal cared for, every challenge overcome, and every visitor welcomed is part of a story that started long before us and, hopefully, will continue long after us.

We’re grateful every day for the opportunity to learn from those who came before us, to work alongside them, and to share this way of life with our children, our community, and all of you.

The farm has given us so much more than a livelihood—it has given us memories, purpose, and time together.

And for that, we feel incredibly lucky ✨

Our Farmers & Makers Market is back ✨

Join us on Saturday, August 15th for a day celebrating local farmers, makers, artisans, food vendors, and small businesses. Wander through dozens of unique vendor booths, meet our friendly farm animals, enjoy family-friendly entertainment, and spend the day supporting local. Applications are currently open for our 3rd annual outdoor summer market.

Whether you’re searching for handcrafted goods, farm-fresh products, delicious treats, or simply looking for a fun summer outing, there’s something for everyone.

Interested in becoming a vendor? We’re looking for farmers and makers who create, grow, and produce their own products. Vendor applications close June 19th.

A rooster’s face actually tells you a lot.

That bright comb and wattles? They help regulate body temperature and can even tell you a little about health and circulation. A healthy rooster often carries a vibrant colour and confident posture.

But a rooster’s real job goes far beyond looking handsome.

In a free-range setting, roosters are protectors, lookouts, peacekeepers, and leaders. They keep watch for danger from above, call hens over when they find food, break up disagreements, and sound the alarm if they spot something suspicious. Many will even offer treats to their hens before taking them themselves.

And yes… sometimes they’re loud.

But around here we think that confidence, curiosity, and the occasional dramatic announcement are all part of the charm.

Next time you visit, spend a little more time looking at the roosters — there’s a lot more going on behind those eyes than people think ✨

Our three newest ducklings are settling in beautifully and proving to be unbelievably social.

These little ones were hatched by their surrogate mama from eggs gifted to us by one of our favourite farmers, who heartbreakingly lost their original donor duck to a predator.

While they’re enjoying life here for now, these babies won’t be staying at Kensington Prairie Farm forever. Their future is to return home and help continue a little piece of her story — something that feels pretty special.

Until then, thank you for helping us shower them with love, spoil them with mealworms, and remind us that sometimes community shows up in the smallest and fluffiest ways.

We’re excited to be a small part of their journey 🤍

A little throwback to Farmer Dee and baby Pebbles ✨

Birthdays always feel like a good excuse to pause and celebrate the people behind the scenes who help make this place what it is.

From caring for animals to dreaming up events, welcoming guests, building community, and pouring her heart into the details most people never see — Farmer Dee has helped shape so much of what Kensington Prairie Farm is today.

Please join us in wishing her the happiest birthday!

Dolly, Dotty & Doodle sure do have welcoming personalities, and they absolutely love mealworms!

While we always recommend feeding our birds from the mini buckets provided, some guests enjoy offering mealworms by hand. If you choose to do so, please be aware that you might get a little nip. Every chicken and duck has their own unique personality and level of gentleness, and sometimes excitement gets the better of them when treats are involved.

They certainly don’t mean any harm, and while a surprised finger might disagree in the moment, the discomfort is usually brief. Thank you for helping us keep treat time fun and safe for both our feathered friends and our guests ✨

Happy Sunday from Jamal ✨

If you visit today, you’ll notice Jamal is admiring his fans from a little farther away than usual.

Our handsome guy is coming to the end of rut season, so right now we’re giving him a bit of extra space and keeping interactions to viewing and learning rather than getting up close.

Rut is a completely natural seasonal period for intact male camels where hormones shift and behaviour can change a little. During this time they can become more focused, more vocal, and sometimes less interested in social visits than normal. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong — it just means we listen to what the animals are telling us and adjust accordingly.

Jamal is doing great and before long he’ll be back to charming guests the way he always does.

For now, come say hi from a respectful distance and learn all about one of the biggest personalities on the farm.

11:30
12:45

LAST CALL FOR VENDORS — applications are closing soon.

If you’ve been thinking about joining us for our 3rd Annual Farmers & Makers Market, this is your reminder to apply before it’s too late.

We’re looking for incredible farmers, growers, makers, artists, bakers, and local businesses to help us create another unforgettable market day at the farm. As always, this event is curated to celebrate handmade, homegrown, and locally created — no resellers.

One of our favourite parts of hosting these markets is introducing our community to passionate small businesses and watching connections happen in real life.

Applications close June 19 at 11:59 PM.

Apply through our website or click the link in bio.

We can’t wait to see who joins us this year ✨
