Well said & a big Thanks to all the Milk Truck drivers who pick milk up in all kinds of weather!
Milk was picked up at our farm this morning despite icy roads. Milk was also picked up at our farm on Christmas Day, despite it being a holiday! Each farm is required to have enough bulk tank storage for 2 days worth of milk and, like clockwork, every other day, the milk truck pulls in and ensures that our milk gets from our farm to a local processor. It seems simple to us but there is a massive effort behind the scenes to ensure this happens, each and every day, seamlessly. Pickup on farms has to be planned around milking times because the milk being picked up has to be cooled below 4 degrees before it leaves. Every bulk tank of milk picked up has to be assessed before it’s loaded, and a sample needs to be taken for lab analysis of all the quality factors that our milk needs to meet and that we get paid on. How much milk each processor takes and on what days helps decide where each truckload of milk is taken and this is done trying to ensure the least distance traveled for each load. At the plant, more samples taken of each truck before unloading, again to ensure quality standards are being met. Unloading and then back on the road again. When our milk truck arrives at our farm, usually between 6 and 6:30am each morning, the driver has usually already been on the road for a couple of hours. In Ontario it typically takes only 2-3 days for milk to get from our farm to your store shelf! That’s an incredible turnaround time and it’s why the milk we all get to enjoy is some of the freshest you’ll find anywhere! And it all happens, in big part, thanks to our milk truck drivers, working 365 days a year! So the next time you see one of those beautiful, shiny milk trucks on the road with their precious cargo, dont be shy to give them a wave of appreciation…they certainly deserve it!!
