A growing season is a bit like a steam engine, slow to start and then once it picks up pace it’s full steam ahead well this year it’s just been a little slower to get to the full steam ahead, but yesterday’s Nor’easter bringing lots of rain into heavy wet snow pretty much summed up this years spring so far!
But do we really want each season to be like the last?!
A snowy winter and wetter and cooler spring this year has allowed our water table to replenish, our irrigation pond to reach near capacity, it’s allowed us to see how many trees (planted by CARP) we have sadly lost from last years drought and enjoy a little more time with Evie.
We have maintained our schedule of seeding the crops that need to be transplanted and kept up with our potting up schedule, but direct seeding and getting transplants out has required a little bit of jigging this year with those cooler temperatures. We have played around with quicker turn around in the greenhouse and rather than mowing and covering the greens with tarps, we mowed covered with compost and got the first round of pole beans straight in.
Some of your favourite spring crops may be a little later this year but rest assured seasonal deliciousness is slowly making its way back to the market stand.
Just a side note on the last picture we also discovered it takes a really long time to tick check Evie’s ears!!!!
