Come on out and groove to the tunes of Marrow Bones Marrow Bones while being instructed on how to dance the figures by MBC Mary Beth Carty No experience necessary but enthusiasm essential!! Ok folks! Here we go on our experimental farming ‘sabbatical’. I use that word a bit tongue and cheek but it turns out that there is historical context, in ancient times, a Farmers Sabbatical would happen every 7 years when the farms would be left to rest for a year, essentially left fallow to recover from intensive use. Although we are not shutting the farm down for a year, we are taking a bit of a break, and it does happen to be our seventh year on this land! This break will allow us to rest the soil and give ourselves a rest at the same time. We have not left our soils bare however but have taken time to plant the garden beds up with ‘green manure’ which are plants like legumes and grains which are good for the soil and will eventually be incorporated into the soil (as in the video posted) adding organic matter. This is a way to build healthy soils while also breaking the cycles of pest and disease in the garden. We’re excited and trepidatious about this plan but will enjoy the time resting and spending time with family and friends. We plan to be back on the farm and at market with veggies early September. See you then! And thanks as always for the incredible support, we literally can’t do any of this without you!!

We had all hands on deck today to get ready for Antigonish Farmers’ Market tomorrow 8:30-1:00
Our crew is smaller this year, both in numbers and age.. We are embarking on an experimental season on the farm whereby we have no staff and have finally put our biggest investments (our children!) to work.. Don’t worry we pay them fairly and they only manage a couple of hours a week but it works with our paired down season. We are in the process of winding the gardens down for a well-deserved mid-season rest. I’ll post more about this next week but just so you know, tomorrow will be our last market before our self-determined, well-deserved mid-season break! So come and get some sweet BBLF produce while you can… we have lots and lots!
We’ll be back at the market in the fall. Watch this space…
